Power Adders?
I am looking at purchasing a 1500 and I was wondering what I could do for some quick power. I believe the owner already has a superchips programmer for it, but I was wondering if there was anything else I could to add power easily.
I come have a diesel minded belief. Simple stuff like CAIs, exhausts, programmers, could easily add upwards of 100hp. I'm just not sure how to get benefits like that from a gas engine without tearing into the block.
Secondly, I plan to drive from Kentucky to Colorado to my next base and I was wondering what I could do to the transmission to make it stronger without rebuilding or changing the torque convertor. I suppose you could say I am looking for the easy way out, which I know there isn't one.
From what I can remember here are specs on the truck:

From what I can remember here are specs on the truck:
- Larger wheel/tire package. I want to say it was a 20 inch wheel on 35 inch tires.
- Superchips
- 5.9 liter engine
- Black leather interior
- Quad Cab/Short Box
- Bose Sound System
- Heated Seats
- Electronic Four Wheel Drive
- 4x4 Off Road Package
- 2 Inch Body Lift
- Rhino Lined Bed
Well its time to learn how to rethink things, I dont know what the superchips will do on the 5.9 gasser but on the hemi its not a large gain. With a superchips tuner, cai and exhaust I was puttining down roughly 35rwhp more than stock.... To get an extra 100hp to the wheels you're going to be ripping into the engine or going FI or adding a shot nitrous.
I really don't see nitrous as being viable for daily driving.
I apologize but the addition of power adders seem like a waste of money on gasoline engines.
Anyone else care to input?

superchips actually does a lot on the ol 5.9, 46 hp and like 59 lb ft torque, of course to the ground your prob looking at 30 hp, and 45 lb ft torque. But it is a noticeable gain on the 5.9, I dont regret it one second. Altogether, if you get everything that the minor modders do on these then you can probably look at a total of 75 to 80 rwhp, 130-140 crank. Thats tuner, exhaust, CAI, throttle body, intake, roller rockers, e-fan, and a couple other toys. Its not really a waste though, just remember, 5 hp on a lighter gas truck is like 8-10 on a heavy diesel.
PM HEMIFEVER for a SCT tune. You send him your SCT and he will program it for 100 dollars. You just need to install a 180* T-stat. THat will be the best gain you will ever have from any other power adders.
Other adders:
1.7 Roller Rockers (For those who do not want to do a cam install)

BTW, i am in the Army as well. I drove my 1996 Ram (see sig) from Ft Drum to Oklahoma, then to california (had 150,000 miles). I sold it in Cali and bought a 2001 ram. I just really like these trucks. The off road package will help with your DITY and towing because the ratio wil be 4.10 rear, but make sure that you do not drive it in OD.
As for Transmissions, something called SURE CURE is a good thing. But not necessary. I just got a derale deep pan with cooling tubes. Available from summit for 129.00.
Comes with a magnetic drain plug and a bung for a temp sensor if you so desire

Don't mess with the tranny until you notice something wrong. Just get a drain and refill (not a flush). YOu can also search the DIYs for something called a "Check Ball Delete." It is just taking out the check valve from the cooler line on the passenger side of the engine. THat is the thing that causes lots of problems for our trannies.
Read through the MontyC's corner for tranny info. It is a sticky in this forum. The only thing that went wrong for me when doing a dity move was throwing a belt due to a bad idler pulley. No tranny issues tow/hauling 2500 lbs (1500 bed and 1000 trailer).

also, getting these injectors will help performance and gas mileage:

Since they are slightly larger than stock (24# as poopsed to 21#) it will leave some room for any other upgrades you do. Plus they will actually run 25.5# with our fuel pressure (40-50 psi). The biggest upgrade about them is that they are 4 hole injectors. Stock is 1 hole. I had these on my 5.2, and will be installing them on my 5.9 soon. I still have an extended warranty on my truck (only 48.5K miles).

Sorry I didn't add this in the first post, but this post is related to a 2003 Dodge 1500, not the 97 that is shown in my signature so this post has been improperly moved but under my own fault.
I talked to the owner today and he said he will sell the superchips with the vehicle. So I think I will sell the superchips and contact HemiFever about an SCT. How hard are the rockers to drop in?
