Rant!
Did you check your thermostat?
Have you changed your coolant lately, and maybe need to "burp" the air bubbles out of the system?
Radiator clogged with bugs?
The stock fan should be able to cool the engine under most any condition.

I had a thermostat stuck on my 99 Exploder (I sure have a lot of Explorer stories) - stuck closed or mostly closed. It was on a trip back from Ohio to Tennessee. The last 100 miles of my trip, I had the heater blasting full to cool the engine. It worked, but it was definately running close to the "hot" end of the gauge.
Swapped out the t-stat and it was fine. Funny thing, I replaced the factory "made in Germany" with an Autozone "made in China" thermostat. Didn't see that coming!
It's not advisable to continue to run with it hot like that.

Yeah checking those rad hoses and rad cap is the first and more simple thing i would do. From there I would pull the stat and run w/o it to see it that helps. If so then replace the stat. If not then I would start maybe looking at the fan if you are getting hot at idle in traffic but not moving down the road.
Unless the fan clutch has failed.

The eFan won't resolve an overheating problem unless it is a failed fan clutch. Are you running normal temperatures at highway speeds? If so, than it looks like the fan clutch is shot. Try turning the fan by hand with the engine off. There should be considerable resistance. If not then it really looks likethe fan clutch has gone south. If the fan clutch id working ok, then start checking the system. Rad cap not holding pressure will cause a problem. Does the radiator have cold spots? good luck...
