I change mine every 3000 no matter what-use Penzoil High Mileage and a Fram XG Filter everytime. Been doing that for 110,000 miles and have had to do nothing but changes the tires.

I do mine with Royal Purple every 5k mi. I was gonna try to go a little longer but it's just easier to remember when it's due, 45k, 50k, 55k etc...

Synthetic 5W-20 every ~6k (10k km's)
During the motor rebuild there was no sludge whatsoever. Crumpled a Fram filter like a pop can, I use moto-master filters now
