Make your Ram last 300k miles - tips, tricks, and B.S.
Lets hear all the little tips and tricks you use to make your truck last longer. Throw in the crazy b.s. stories you've heard as well for this too.
- Keep the tank above 1/4, saves the fuel pump
- free flowing exhaust and intake, engine breathes better
- blow off the filter once in awhile with compressed air, keep the dust off
- use the block heater and let it warm up in winter
- use the 4x4 at least once a month
- religious oil changes for engine, trans, differentials, and t-case
- e-fan to keep the motor from getting hotter in traffic
- should really get a transmission temp guage soon
- had one teacher who said to put soap on the fanbelt, said it kept it conditioned so it didn't crack haha
- I've heard of people using bb's to balance tires, so it balances the whole rotating assembly instead of just the tire. Maybe some merit to this?
- Using octane booster. Haven't seen one test that shows it actually works

Gas Treatment by STP. I use it every gas tank in the winter and anytime I'm pulling heavy.
Other than that regular maintence and grandpa driving will get you to 300K.
I do want to switch to the e-fan. Just not sure if I'll have the truck that long.

back when I had an Exploder (laugh it up) the fuel pump went out and when i got it replaced my mechanic at the time told me that those things will basically go out no matter what after about 100k. all i know is that it was a $400 tab that i had to pick up when i was just a teenage kid who didnt know any better.
also, is there something about driving your truck a short distance everyday that will wear it down faster as well? i mean if you never warm everything up and just do short drives everyday?

Warming up an engine is the toughest part of running it, I've heard it's equivalent to driving 200 miles on the highway for wear and tear. Engines that don't get hot are also prone to sludge buildup.
my grandpa has an izuzu pup pickup w over 330k on the speedo, original engine and tranny. Hes replaced the water pump and clutch and thats it (other than small maintenance stuff)
He changes the oil religiously at 3k. Wont drive 15 miles over the 3k without changing. I dunno, might be a good truck but 330k is alot
My dads trash truck is a little mazda b3000 w 220 on it, just replaced the starter solenoid and clutch at 180k. Thats it on the truck. Once again, religious oil changes at 3k.

To add to the B.S. side of the thread - "Never fill the filter before you put it on the engine. Unfiltered oil is bad for it." and "It's not a problem. Don't confuse dirty oil with bad oil. Fresh oil causes more engine wear than oil with a couple grand on it."
"Yeah, it's normal... I believe it's just the crank spinning down and the rotating assembly inside the engine coming to a stop. This car is one of the roughest at shut down I've ever seen. The exhaust sputters out loudly and you hear the squeak/clunk of the crank spinning down."
