Horrible Gas Mileage
My brother-in-law has a 02 QC 1500 Ram with the 5.9 in it. He has that whistleing TB spacer along with a K&N drop in filter and a Magnaflow muffer on it. With the very few motor mods i have on my hemi, it's like night and day as far as power goes but what really caught my attention was the fact that his gas mileage was terrible.............like to the tone of 9mpg terrible. The truck has 94,xxx on it. Starts up, idles, and runs fine as far as i can tell. No CEL or anything of that sort. I acquired a 86 D-150 Sport SWB from my dad upon his passing. It was a 5.9 in it with a Quadrajet and it gets a low but modest 10-11mpg. I know it's a smaller truck than my brother-in-laws but dang...........atleast his is FI which is worth something i would think. I wonder if his MPG is normal.
Perfectly normal for a 5.9. I had a '98 that only got double digit mpgs if I was strictly doing highway travel, and then it JUST got into double figures.
One of the first reports I read on the Hemi when it was released was that it gave you 100 more HP while getting 33% better fuel economy (and that was pre-MDS Hemi days)...

I knew the 5.7 had significant more power than the 5.9 but i wasn't aware that much more. Good info Hammer, thanks. About that TBS........it's plumb annoying when riding with him.......just a constant whistle.....he likes it though i guess so whatever. I'd be like you though Mike and ditch it.
Maybe he thinks it sounds like a S/C?
