I see many older Rams that are losing their paint all over the roofs, hoods and topsides of the fenders. It'll look grey for a while until most of the paint wears away and then it will eventually rust. There is still a coating on there although it may look to be bare metal. This is why it takes awhile because that layer takes time to be penetrated. Pretty sure they are galvanized panels.
If your paint is just beginning to peel, this is cheaper to have repainted than if there was rust. Paint a hood and roof will run ~$500-900 depending on the place. A whole vehicle paint is anywhere from $1200-2800+ depdant upon quality.
You'd be much better off saving your payments that you would otherwise be making and repainting the whole truck eventually. Doing partial will still lead into other parts peeling and ofcourse the paint won't match the same. Do it all or not at all. My .02

Thanks for the welcome aboard.....It's really sickening watching my truck go through this. I was watching a movie this week called "Grand Torino" and in it, Clint Eastwood has a 1972 Torino which has a fantastic paint job, which was probably the original paint job on the vehicle...
I looked at mine and wondered why my paint was peeling..I think somebody skimped somewhere.

We don't have too many members complain about paint, but when a guy does, for some reason it's really bad.
I personally haven't seen a 3rd Gen myself with the issue, but have seen a fair share of 2nd Gen trucks. Oddly, I am in south Georgia and north Florida and you'd think with the sun beating down on them the way it does here I'd see it.
Only way to do it right is to have it painted and what sucks is every bargain place (like Maaco) I've ever seen do a paint job was terrible. They don't remove a thing, but just tape and if you get two years out of it before it starts looking like it did when you brought it to them, your lucky...

Just from the appearance of the paint alone, i have to be honest i couldn't recommend this truck to someone in good faith..
If i can't get a good paint job at a reasonable price, then i'll sell/trade it in and get some other make.........I know you guys are loyal Dodge fans, but with my paint job, and some of the other things i wouldn't purchase another Dodge ever.......

I hear you Cali, but no one spends in excess of $28K for a truck then expect to fork out another $2k-$3K eight years later for a paint job...
Someone dropped the ball on this one.
