Default New 3rd Gen owner with a couple newbie questions.

Hello I just traded my '98 1500 2wd extra cab 318/auto with 220K on the clock for a 2007 2500HD 4x4 Crew cab Hemi and 6spd manual with 38K.

I like it.

My 5'9" long legged 12yo son fits in the backseat without whining and the the 4x4 has already come in handy in the snow. My old 2wd literally got stuck on damp grass several times.

I've got a couple newbie questions, I hope they don't qualify as tech because I'm putting them here in the no tech zone.

First, what trans have I got? I think it's either a Mercedes of some description or an NV4500.

And second, what do you call these axles? I think they are Chrysler Corporate, but I'm more familiar with Dana products.

I'm not planning any drastic mods, I've got a couple old International Scouts for that. This is a daily driver/tow rig/hunting/fishing/camping traveling to see the inlaws three states away truck. So I want to keep it simple and bulletproof and any mods/upgrades will be in that direction.

Thanks fellas, this looks like a great place for information.

Dave

The tranny is most likely the 545-RFE. The diff is probably the 10 1/2" (?) with 3.73 gears. There may be a tag on the diff showing the ratio. There also may be a sticker on the glove box door with lots more details.

Welcome aboard!

READ! He's got a manual tranny... LOL...

Transmission would be a Mercedes Built G56, which has shown to be a pretty decent one, at least as good as the NV5600 that preceded it.

Axles are indeed the Chrysler Corporate or AAM axles. Rear would probably be a 10.5" 14 bolt, 30 spline although an 11.5" 14 bolt, 30 spline was available as a special order. Front axle is the Chrysler Corporate (AAM) 9.25" 14 bolt, 33 spline with a reverse cut ring gear. This is not the same 9.25" axle used for the rear of the 1/2 ton trucks. Ratio is probably 3.73 although again, the highly desirable 4.10s were available as a special order.

I'm more of a Dana guy myself, but the AAMs have proven to be pretty reliable. The negatives you'll hear regarding AAM axles grenading are a result of the LSD in the 9.25" half ton rear and not the fault of the axle itself...

LOL! Yep, I knew I wanted a manual, it took a long time to decide if I wanted Hemi or Cummins. Finally went with Hemi because a low mile diesel was running over my budget. Found this one 4hrs away in WV but it had everything I was looking for. I was seriously thinking about a Hemi 6spd manual Power Wagon I found in Tennesee. Sweet truck, but it had close to 100K on the clock and it made me nervous.

Thanks for the welcome fellas.

HammerZ71, Just saw your edit. Thanks for the info! I like to know what hardware I'm running.

DUH! Well, the 545 counts if you include 2nd prime.

Thanks Guys, I think it looks pretty damn nice myself!

99Ramman, they're 265/70-17s. They're just about new so I'll stick with them until they wear out. After that, I'm thinking about 33x11.5 or so.
