In order for a company to be able to market their automotive product as; "The Official ? Of N.A.S.C.A.R.", the product has to be used by the majority (at least 51%) of the race teams. That means that the majority (51%) or more of the race teams use; Mobil 1 oil, Raybestos Brakes, and WIX oil filters, for starters. The race teams can choose whatever product they want to run and most of them choose the above products.

Thats not necessarily true bud,,,it's a contract partnership a company has with NASCAR...like "HOME DEPOT" was the official Home Improvement Warehouse of NASCAR, til they decided to cut back sponsorship in the sport...LOWES stepped up and negotiated a better contract with NASCAR to fill that spot...

You are not going to benefit from 10w-30 over 5w-30 for towing. In your area, a larger concern would be flow at startup in cold weather. Tolerances on modern engines are a lot tighter than they used to be so using a motor oil outside of that which is recommended by the manufacturer is generally not a good idea.
If you had an '06 Hemi with MDS you can really screw things up with a thicker oil...

Exactly...both 5W-30 and 10W-30 are the exact same oils at operating temp.

Could that be because not only to they get the stuff for free, but the sponsor actually pays to have that sticker on the car?

The way he has it worded is misleading...Mobile1 is currently used by 50% of the teams in all 3 national touring divisions...however...to be called "The Official" Anything in NASCAR only requires a contract to be negotiated with NASCAR itself..and the company paying NASCAR for the rights to be called "The official so and so of NASCAR"...

I work for Amalie Oil, we had a contingency program with IHRA competitors to run our decals...basically, they buy our oil, stick our decal on the car...win their class for the weekend...send us a pic of the car with the decal, we pay them $$$

When we were "The Official Engine Oil of the IHRA" our company was paying nearly $5,000,000.00 a year to be called that...we were also investing nearly $11,000,000.00 a year into our race team.

If I was a crew chief and had a choice of using a free product, oil in this case, that gave my engine a disadvantage, or buying my own oil for a performance advantage...I would use whatever gave me an edge. Mobil 1, "free" or paid for, obviously gives the majority of the teams an advantage.

If Mobil 1 was not the best, it would not be the factory fill, and recommended, oil in the factory performance cars I mentioned earlier.

Actually, most of these decisions are made at a higher level than the crew chief, at the corporate/owner level and is almost always based on promotional fees paid by the manufacturer. Obviously, the crew chief can have a say if he feels the product gives a disadvantage, but if the product basically meets specs, it's used.

Getting free product ain't sh*t to these guys. Getting a couple hundred thousand a year or more in promotional fees is what makes these guys choose on product over another.

I did a lot of tourney bass fishing in the '90s. A ham n' egger like me didn't get much more than free lures to use, but I knew some guys who were sponsored and got promotional fees for using certain products. I've also worked as a golf pro and you think 90% of the guys on tour who "choose titleist" golf ***** do so just because they get them for free or because they are just so much better than a Bridgestone 330 or Callaway Tour ball?
Hell, Callaway was awarded a HUGE settlement because they caught Titleist copying THEIR BALL, 90% of the tour "chooses" Titleist over Callaway.

I've also sent a few different oils out for analysis over the years. Mobil 1 is good, but the difference between most 100% full synthetics is negligible...
