Default 4.7 - Rebuild or Scrap?

A few months ago my 4.7 was knocking bad after over heating.
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...y-guesses.html

I chose to do a hemi swap instead of putting the time and money into fixing up the 4.7. I have absolutely no regrets

I finally took the oil pan off and looked underneath and everything looks ok. The crank appears to be slightly worn. It's looking like the overheating caused the piston detonation. The cylinder wall has a scratch big enough for a fingernail.

Local machine shop said they could bore all of the cylinders to be the same size, clean the block, magnaflux to check for cracks, check line bore, hone, and then clean everything up for $360. $56 labor to install pistons if I want them to. They said they would match any prices for pistons, etc or help me find the best deal possible.

I'm hoping to get a little money back from the hemi swap, but I'm also looking to learn something by putting it back together. I figured I could either try to sell the rebuilt engine or try to find a truck or something that needs this particular engine (16T crank tone wheel) and sell it. I would still need one head, pistons, timing chain set.

Or I could throw it in the back of the truck and take it to the scrap yard?

I wouldn't bother putting money into it if you aren't gonna use it.

sounds like a fun little project but it also sounds like an expensive one

Agreed, if you arent going to use it then I would not worry about it. Building it for someone else to hopefully buy could have your money tied up for a while or even taking a loss later just to get rid of it.

However, I would not send it to the scrap yard either. I would part it out and sell it on the forums (heads, intake, crank, block, injectors, ECT)

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll skip the rebuild. I'll see if someone wants the block, but I doubt anyone would since it needs bored. I was planning on selling the 1 good head and other stuff. I think the bad head and block will end up scrapped though.

Pretty good. With the hemi and new 4.56 gears, I love the truck.
