You need a bigger engine . Why a manufacture would put a small V6 in a 6000# truck is beyond me.

With that being said, of course you can re-gear it. With someone like yourself who likely has 3.21s or 3.55s, the options are 3.92s, 4.10s and 4.56s.

I went from 3.55's to 4.10's in my truck, same year, engine, and tranny as you and my highway mpg has dropped. It sounds like mpg is the most important factor with your truck so I would advise against regearing.

I just figured if I do not regear it with the 22" rims I have ordered it will slug to death on small hills

What size tire are you gonna run, the main thing is the tire height?

I have not ordered any yet, I'm thinking a 305/40/22 would that be fine to run?

Are you running stock 245/70/17's now? With the 22 you listed vs. the stock size you'd only lose about 100 rpm at 65mph by stepping up to the 1.6 inch taller tire. Regearing to the next ratio of 3.92 w/ the 22's would put your rpm at about 90 higher than w/ 3.55's and the stock tire. While you could regear, the time, money, and hassle of finding a good installer aren't worth it for the slight difference in rpm at cruising speed. If you went to 4.10's I think it would hurt your highway mpg too much.
