Default VHT tinting my taillights

I want to VHT my taillights and third brake light this weekend and was wondering just how to go about doing it the right way. I don't want to tint my back up light section of the lenses just the taillight part and wasn't sure how to go about it. I have read the threads and none of them talked about masking off the back up section and that was the part I was having the most concern about along with the tinting in general. A step by step and a materials needed list would be awesome.

I masked off the white part on my f150. i just taped over the part then took a sharp razor and cut off the tape where i didn't want it then sprayed and removed the tape when i was done spraying. just like masking off anything normally.

step by step would be

1.remove lights from truck
2.Clean lights really well (sand if you please I didnt do it on any of the ones i did)
3.mask off any areas you dont want tinted (on my ram i sprayed the whole thing lights are still plenty bright on my f150 i masked the reverse section)
4.Spray thin coats, don't lay it on thick the first coat may look a little blotchy just be patient let tack for whatever peiod it says on can the re spray the next coat repeat until you get the darkness you want.
5.let dry
6.remove masking
7.wetsand if you please, I dont some people do.
8. once pleased with job then reinstall on truck and enjoy the results

How many clear coats did you do?
If I were to wetsand after clear coat is 2000 too rough for final product?

Can I just use a rubbing compound after the clear coat dries instead of sanding?

Correct, I did not wet sand after my clear coat. I used lacquer BTW as my clear. I did 3 runs of VHT and then probably 4-5 runs of clear.

My clear was really smooth so I didnt need to wet sand it. Ive never used rubbing compound so I cant answer that for you.

I put 4 clear coats on. I think I'm gonna take a polisher and try it out. It actually worked out just clear coat. But if u look closely you can see a little orange peel. I'm picky...

Did you happen to try polishing after the clearcoat yet? I did my tails today with two coats of VHT and four coats of clearcoat, the last coat of clear was pretty heavy and they turned out really good. I was wondering the same thing about skipping the wetsanding and just rubbing them out with Meguiars compound. Like I said they look really good but I really like that deep look I have seen in a few posts. Try to get some pics up tomorrow.
