Default 87 Octane Tune

For those of you with a tuner who use the 87 octane setting...

Would you tow in that setting?

I know there is a towing setting, but what setting would benefit MPG while towing?

Dunno about other brands but Superchips "officially" does not endorse the 87 octane tune for anything over 1500# of towing/hauling combination, however, although they do not specifically endorse it, they acknowledge that the 87 tune in combination with 91 octane fuel or higher safely pulls up to 5000# with no noticeable pre-detonation.

They do say that the 87 tune with 87 fuel pings much over 2000#, so they recommend staying at the 1500# limit with 87 octane gas. No data on 87 tune with 89 fuel that I can find, at least w/ a quick search...

When I tow I use 93 octane (premuim in the midwest), and 2 bottles of STP gas treatment per tank.

That is interesting, but I personally am towing something closer to 7K.

I'd love to do it with a CTD and get 15 MPG while doing it, but they think their trucks are worth their wieght in gold...

I tow 7000# with 3.55 in the rear end, OD off and cruise set at 65 - 70. I get 10.5 MPG... RAM takes it like a champ. I towed this same trailer with my 1998 5.9L RAM 4x2.

I pull almost 8k in tractor, rough cut and trailer about 3-4 times a year to cut my small piece of farm property and my truck does it easily (now granted, I have 4.56 gears & the only change I make is I swap the Perf tune to the Tow tune). Pulls with no issue at all.

I think if I did it on anything like a regular basis or for farther than about 14 miles each way I'd do the MagHytech or PML cover ( I already installed a tranny temp gauge - but really cause I replaced my broke pillar with a gauge pillar).

You might want to look into the aftermarket cover and a gauge. Those covers really do make a HUGE difference by not only allowing more fluid, but have cooling fins...

Maybe this link (below), from the Superchips forum, might shed some light on your question?

If the tow tune has no power improvements and only transmission enhancements, WHT does it require 91 octane when you can tow 8800lbs stock with earlier, crappy shifting with 89 octane fuel? Makes no sense to me. If it was jacking up the low end timing for more torque, I could understand that.
