Default rebuild, or buy 4.7L, or 5.9L

I am in a rock and a hard spot guys.. I have a ram 1500 and it has a hole in the main something on the bottom of the block. I have been told that I should just buy a whole new motor because this part is bored to the specs. of the block and that just getting a new one is impossible.. I have no clue. I need help.

I think you might be in the wrong section. The 5.9L hasn't been used since 2002 what year is your truck?

My guess is 2002 or 2003, but definitely 3rd gen, since the 4.7L was not used before that in Rams. I will move it there now.

ddnursin08, if your Ram is not between the 2002 and 2008 model years, let me know.

Ok, 2002, so you have a 4.7 or a 5.9, which one? I'm guessing the 4.7?

I blew a hole in a 4.7.. I can't find one to replace it for less than $3000. So I am trying to figure out whether it would be better just to get a new one, rebuild my old one, or put a 5.9 in it.. I have found alot more 5.9's for $1200 and even cheaper.. But I have heard that there is alot that I would have to do to convert..

Yup. You would basically need a whole donor truck. Transmission was different, wiring, many sensors, PCM, etc. etc.

The tranny behind the 5.9L V8 was a 46RE. The 545RE behind the 4.7L V8 and Hemi is a lot more reliable. Take a peak into the 2nd gen section and look at all the threads about the transmission. It you treat it right, it'll usually be fine, but you abuse it even once, and it can bite you in the rear (total rebuild). If you go the 5.9L route, rather than pay money for an iffy stock 46RE, get one from these guys. They build up the 46REs to be very durable and very reliable.

Are you looking for a new engine to replace it, or rebuilt? The other thing is are you capable of doing it yourself or will you have to have it done? Labor is usually what drives the price up.

Reliable is all I care.. New or rebuilt is no different to me. I can do all the work myself, and I have always wanted to do it.. I might be on here for tips once I can make my mind up on what to do here.. It looks like it is going to be cheaper to go with the 4.7. Now maybe someone on here knows a reliable source to get one from with a decent warranty on it..
