best and cheapest usually dont go hand in hand...if you want the best go with Bilsteins...but they aint gonna be cheap...

Welcome to DF. First, before anything else, please read this.

I will move this to the 3rd Generation Ram section (2002-2008 Dodge Rams) for you.

As 96magnumram stated, cheapest and best almost never go hand-in-hand when it comes to auto parts. Not trying to get you down, but these trucks will never be as smooth as a Mercedes or other luxury vehicles, due to their solid axle setup and suspension systems. They are designed for solid work, not smooth floating.

Cheapest I've found is Monroe Monro-Matic Plus shocks, about $25 a piece at O'Reillys Auto Parts. You can probably find similar cheaper online, BUT O'Reillys has a Lifetime Warranty on them. If one ever breaks, you take it off, take it in, they swap it out, have a nice day. Good local service, no shipping or waiting time. However, Monro-Matics are middle-of-the-road stiffness, definitely not soft shocks.

I like the Monroe Reflex shocks myself, plan on getting set up with them next time mine are due for replacement, but they are even stiffer, designed for mild off-road use.

I have bilstein 5100s and they do great. Not a Mercedes ride but its smooth sailing for a truck. If u want a tad bit cheaper maybe go with normal bilsteins. The ones with blue and yellow. If u don't want to pay shipping o Reilys auto can get them for you. Not sure if u have one where u live. Also welcome to the forum

Bilstein 5100 HD's all around on my 05'. MUCH MUCH better ride than the stockers for sure. It will never be a smooth mercedes like ride though, well, unless you swap suspensions with a 09'+ those drive super smooth, almost car like.

I just installed the Bilstein OEM shocks for my '05 and I'm not liking them as much as I thought I would. They are OK but not great. When coming to a stop, the front of the truck still wants to dip and bounce back a little as if the shocks are too weak. They may have smoothed out some of the medium sized bumps in the road, but overall they aren't as smooth as I had hoped. I too wanted to have a smoother, more sure-footed feel to the suspension, but I haven't gotten it yet. Since I just spent almost $300 on the set of 4 I just installed, I'll be waiting quite a while to try something else.
