Default air filter... how big is too big?

Just like an exhaust pipe sizing, is there a certain baseline or limit to how big of an air filter you should have? My new one is a freaking monster @ almost 2lbs and 11" tall. I am not to sure if this is too much or if the only limit is per your bay fitment space.

Thanks.

The size/surface area of the filter isn't relevant, the piping can be too big just like for exhaust. Since the cold air intakes use a 4" tube for the hemi, as long as your tube and filter inlet is that big you should be good. Donaldson/volant power core filters have huge surface areas since they are essentially a big roll of filter element and don't adversely effect performance. What filter is it, got a link?

That makes sense regarding the piping.
Filter is K&N 1026.

11" Media Height
6" Inlet Flange
7" top OD
7.5" bottom OD

6" inlet flange, that would mean the piping is six inches?

It funnels from 6 to 4". They put the open filter down real low and are is danger of sucking up water. Not the best design for a daily driver, but ok for a weekend warrior.

The new filter is sitting right up to the grille so i may have to do some adjusting so it in further to avoid sucking up rain like you said.

The size / filter area absolutely does make a difference. You can't be "too big" (insert chuckle here) but the more area you have, the less restrictive it is. They can use a more effective media and offset its lower performance by using more of it. That way you get good filtration and good flow too.

Kay, I don't think you will have any problem with that filter placement unless in a really bad rainstorm. A lot of those filters actually drop down in front of one of the tires which is a bad place as water can get splashed up from the road and get sucked into your intake.

Yep, since you have the front mounted TB, you're not hanging down as low as it would on the std Ram intake.
