Default Sunroof?

I'm kind of interested in possibly getting a sunroof put in my truck. Does anyone know if you can buy the factory dodge sunroof?

You cannot buy ANY factory sunroof(moonroof actually) for any car/truck out there.
The reason is because Factory roofs are custom molded to fit the sunroofs and have reinforcements on both sides. Non-sunroof models have a center support which would need to be cut to fit an aftermarket sunroof. You would essentially lose this support when cut. OEM also takes into consideration the overhead console that is in these trucks as well as the dome light that can get in the way of aftermarket.
Aftermarket is your only way to get a sunroof/moonroof. A sunroof is all you can get. Moonroofs have tracks that retract the glass towards the rear to allow direct vision to the sky. I dont know of many aftermarket moonroofs that are out there?

I talked to a guy local that said there is an aftermarket moonroof that retracts straight back but it was around $1100. I might just do without and use the money for something more useful though a moonroof would be nice.

Find a shop that installs Webasto brand sunroofs. They build the stock units for many cars and are the nicest brand out there. Go with an experienced shop and it will be as close to OEM as you could ever get.

Personally, I've never known anybody who got one installed after-market who didn't have a problem with it leaking at some point. Granted, I don't think I've seen an after-market one in about 15 years, maybe they are better now.

I've had a factory one on three Grand Cherokees, including the one I have now and to be honest, you probably have more fingers and toes than the amount of times I've had them open. Same with sliding rear windows, I have one on my truck and have had it open maybe three times in the 7 1/2 years I've had it.

Now I did used to have a sports car with a T-top and drove with the top off all the time, but that's when I was about 20.

I guess it comes down to if you are going to use the thing enough to justify the cost and if it's worth the risk of a leak at some point down the line...

Haha Hammer. I'm the same way! I had a moonroof in my Explorer. Never used it, not once in the 3yrs I owned it! I always even kept the sunshade closed because I can't stand the blinding sun out the corner of my eye. I drive my wifes vehicles with the sunshade closed as well.
However, I used to have T-tops on my toys and loved driving with them off. Different animal I suppose.
I never open my back slider either. I don't like the wind hitting me in the back of the head, plus it sucks all the crap from the bed onto the dash from the negative pressure that is up there after opening the windows. I can't even open the front windows without either cracking open the rear side windows to stop the fluctuations in pressure.

I think $1100 will buy alot more for your truck than the use you'd get out of a moonroof, plus when you go to sell your truck, many people shy away from aftermarket sunroofs because the fear of them leaking.

That's a good point. While there are some days I'd like to crack open a sunroof I suppose I wouldn't use it enough to justify spending $1100 on one. I do have a buddy with the same truck as mine but with a factory sunroof and his leaks like crazy. Glad I posted about it before going out and dropping $1100 on something I'd regret later. Thanks for the input.

I bet his drain holes are plugged up, had the problem with every GC I had/have with factory sunroof. Unplug and flush the drains and it stops leaking until they get plugged up again...

They've come a long way since the 80s style of "cut a hole, slap in a pop-up roof, silicone the hell out of the edges" method.

That's why they're also much more expensive than that kind too. But, when it's in, you can barely tell it wasn't OEM, and that's only if you notice the "well" it's installed in has a rubber trim edge instead of being punched into the roof skin. The controls and functions match OEM perfectly.

I've always loved having a sunroof in the cars I've owned and I would have made sure my truck had one too had it been offered in the years I was searching for. I could always add one to the truck later on but that $$ has other places to go right now.

To each their own, no doubt. If you want it and would use it and understand the possible drawbacks, then go for it. Pricey, but, many of us are slapping $2000-$3,000+ worth of wheels and tires on our trucks that all roll the same way as what came on there, so, what can I say about it...?

As for the sun/moon roof, itself, I'm in the same camp as DD and Hammer. I've had them on several vehicles, and for the most part I kept the shade closed most of the time. The only time I can REALLY remember using it a good deal was when I had my '04 VW Jetta GLI (VR6 w/6 speed!) and I worked nights. It would be very humid in Arkansas at those hours, and the windows would fog up. I would crack the moonroof a few inches and it would keep the windows clear quicker than the A/C would.

Can't say I'd never get one again, but it's not a selling point make/break point for a sale anymore.
