First thing you should look at is what you plan on hauling in the trailer to determine what it might weigh once loaded to your satisfaction. Odd are you'll be in the 8000-9000# range which is getting pretty heavy especially for a bumper pull on these trucks. We pack extremely carefully and lightly to keep our weight just over 8000# but we don't have to worry about sway. At the very least, I think you would need a real good hitch and ideally LT tires. Hopefully you have the 3.92 gearing since not being able to lock out your 4th will make for an anoying drive on windy days. At the end of the day it will move it just fine as you see many others on the road but a few of the manufacturer's ratings will be exceeded.

Dirtballer. I regulary tow an 8k TT. I did have my truck re-geared it came with 3.55. I assume you have a auto trans. Use Tow/Haul feature, it will cut down on the gear searching. You will not be able to pull hills like a deisel, but you'll get there. Keep up on the maintenance. My truck had 80k on it when I started towing now 122k and going strong.

What engine and gears do you have dirt? I know for a fact that if you have a 1500 gas model, 12000 is not the number. It is more likely in the 8k range as others have said. The optimum setup for gas ram 1500 would be factory tow package on 17"wheels with good load rated tires. The 20" wheel package removes about 1000 lbs of tow weight right off the bat. 4x4 would remove a few hundred more. You have to consider the loaded trailer weight as well as the overall weight including cargo and passengers in the truck.
I have been towing 30'+ TT's with mine since it was new. But never had one with a dry weight of 7k or more. But i have 4x4 with 20" wheels. I always use an equalizer hitch with sway and weight distribution. I have factory tow package and always tow in tow/haul mode.

Might want to read that again. There's NO WAY a half-ton pickup can tow twice its weight. NO CLASS III is a bumper hitch. 12,000 towing capacity would give you a GCWR of around 18,000#. That's in the HD Cummins 3500 range.
