hey guys i have a set of 18" rims on my 1500 right now and i hear people always saying 17's are the way to go.... do you think my size (being an inch bigger) will really throw everything off?

I had stock 20's on my 06 ram so in my opinion it's just people wanting to talk smack.

Doesn't matter what the rim size is. The overall tire diameter will be what affects your speedo and effective gear ratio etc. What ever stock overall diameter your truck came with can be matched by some tires that will fit on a 17/18/20 or larger for that matter. The 17's just give you more sidewall and are generally cheaper.

You simply can't deflate 20" for offroad traction like you can 17".. a deflated tire conforms to whatever it rolls over, and provides maximum traction.. in sand, it's a fatter footprint/contact patch.. on trails it can grip both sides of a log or rock, as an example..

On road, of doesn't make a bit of difference unless you're riding stupid low profile tires.. stupid low profile tires will cause you to bend a rim if you're not careful with what you run over..

The only difference on the road I can think of is the 18" rims may be a little heavier reducing fuel and braking efficiency; but then again, we aren't exactly driving Priuses (Prii?)
lol

You can go bigger, just not smaller... smaller rims won't clear the calipers.

My rear 18's are a couple of lbs heavier than my 17's up front but the 18's allow me to run decent size street DR's in the rear full time.
