Lot's of their stuff like hits hard. but it doesn't sound worth two craps. I mean neone can make noise. If you want bass taht sounds crappy put a monkey iwth a crowbar and a drum in ur trunk. but if you want good sound quality that doesn't make you feel like you need to take a shower after hearing it then you need to put some money into it. The best are gonna be brands like JL, Rockford, Resonant Engineering, JBL, Alpine, Clarion, Eclipse, Memphis audio, FI, Polk makes some good comp/coax speakers The best components speakers by far are from MB Quart but they cost a lot. Some of the decent brands are Kicker and MTX I'm not a big fan of them because of the quality of some components. Especially their voice coils which are made of a plastic compound which I don't believe will hold up like a metal one. Audio world is one of them things where you definately get what you pay for.

Sony definitely doesn't have the best stuff out there but its not the worst. My troubleshooting would start with:
1. Like the other guys are saying, check the wiring. Preamp outputs from the deck to the amp and the speaker wire to the sub. Some decks have a sub out and some only have a front and rear out. It sounds like its 1 sub. You should have the amp bridged to a single channel ie. 1 positive or negative from the left speaker out and 1 positive or negative from the right speaker out of the amp. In the end, you should have a positive wire and a negative wire.
2. Check that your sub doesn't have full range coming out of it. Your crossover, whether is built into the amp or is just an inducted coil, should be working and no voices should be coming from the sub. If you do then your crossover is not working. No bass.
3. I would check the gain (as mentioned). Make sure its up. Don't crank it all the way. It may distort. Is the amp under powered for the sub your friend has? Ask the dealer.
4. Whether is a port box or sealed, doesn't really matter that much. Keep in mind that the ported box will sound "boomier" (don't know if this is even a word) but the sealed box will have a "tighter" low end. The sealed box requires more power from the amp to be able to drive the sub because there is back pressure on the coils. The ported box will "make" your amp seem more efficient. Make sure that the box is built to the right cubic feet for the sub.
Everyone here has good info. You should be able to solve this. If you've checked all of this and still don't know then I would recommend you start questioning your components.
