04 RAM LSD question
If I put the truck in neutral and lift both wheels off the ground and spin one, shouldn't the other wheel spin the opposite direction?
If both spin the same direction, what problems might that indicate?
Thanks.

if both spin in the same direction it means you have a limited slip rear end if they spin in different directions you do not some of my books recommened this to test for limited slip others say it is not a good way to tell but I have Nissan pathfinder and the book recommeneds this test as a way to tell
All I know is on any other vehicle I have had, spinning one wheel makes the other go in the opposite direction. I have never understoond why.
I started looking at this a little closer when I notice that turning sharp corners causes the inside tire to bounce (as if it is running at the same speed as the outside wheel). You can really feel it bounce and tear at the pavement in the corners. It made me think something was not working right.
One idea mentioned by the service dept at my local Dodge dealer is that the clutches have frozen up and it is staying in full time posi traction.
Another idea suggested by a local tranny shop was that it needs to have the lsd additive added to the differential. Could it be someoneforgotthe additive on the last service?
Or, is this some indicator of a bigger problem?
Thanks.

I do not know how to check if the additive is in or not your best bet would be to have the fluid changed and make sure they put the additive for the lsd but if you do this and wait to see if it fixes it and it happens to be something else you could cause more damage so make sure your warranty is up to date and if you do not have a warranty go camp out at the dealer service till they find the problem and fix it so it will not cost you more to fix in the long run
and on your wheel hop I would say it sounds like a problem my wheels spin freely when corneringif it is grabbing and hopping it sounds like a problem to me good luck

It sounds like the additive is just worn out. As said above, change the fluid and add the proper amount ofadditive required. I had a 93 dakota with an LSD rear. When I changed the fluid I didn't realize I needed it and the exact same thing happened. Added the slip additive from Mopar and the problem cleared up right away.

Thanks. I pumped out the oil and replaced it and added the additive. Took a drive to check it out, and it seems fine now, although it is not under a load. I usually notice it most when I am pulling a 6000# trailer that I will be hitched to this Friday. I will know then. Thanks again for the responses.
