I have a 04 1500 HEMI with 36,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 5-30 with NAPA GOLD filters and change every 5,000 miles. Between changes I need to add over a quart of oil. Is this typical?

Just thought I would chime in.

I am going through about 2+ quarts, and I meab "+"in 5000 miles. Last round was nearly 1 quart per 1000 miles. That is ridiculous for an engine with 60K miles. I never see oil spots or smell oil in or around the truck. It must be going out the exhaust pipe. Also, coincidentally I have a bad O2 sensor now. Monday I have an appointment to have it looked at. The dealer seemed concerned about the rate of usage. He stated that Chryslers tolerance is about 1qt in 1K miles. That insane as well. I didnt buy a 2 cycle Hemi.

I am using the Amsoil 0W30 SSO synthetic and it has 18,000 since change. Oil is still on the full mark. I would say you have blow by somewhere. It should not use that amount of oil.

^^^Holy sludge...it's been 18,000 milessince your last oil change?? Dude you could put liquid gold inyour engine but it will still get dirtyand it would still need to be changed at least every 5k. If you can't afford to do it that way then use dino oil...doing consistent oil changes with cheaper oil is better then extremely long intervalswith good syntheticoil.

First 36k miles I used Mobil 1 and either a Mobil 1 or Napa Gold (Wix) filter EVERY 3000 miles and it was always at the full line at change time.
After getting REALLY GOOD MPG gains on my Grand Cherokee with a change to Royal Purple in the crankcase & both diffs, I put RP in the truck with a Mobil 1 filter at 36k. I plan on changing at 6k now instead of 3k. Last I checked was at the 3k mark (about a month ago) and it was still at the full line. We'll see if waiting till 6k makes a difference oil consumption on my truck...

I lose/burn 1 qt every 3,500 change...i'm thinking about getting a catch-can because I noticed the inside of my intake covered with oil. I had the same prob with my LS1...got about half a catch-can of oil every 3,500 miles.
