WTF? cd player won't function...
i've read a few threads with people having the same problem but nothing real helpful. last week i was playing a cd and it went over to the next cd and took a minute to read it then said error. I pressed eject hoping the cd was just dirty you can hear the changer making the normal sounds when loading/ejecting a cd. the cd won't come out. after a few times pressing the eject button it completly stopped functioning. mode just goes from am to fm. eject now does nothing. but it keeps making the noise like it's loading or skipping to other tracks or trying to eject even when the truck is off. I took it to dodge and they had the bright idea of taking a fuse out and unplugging the battery which did nothing. Why is it when you do either the radio keeps all the settings?? shouldn't it completly reset itself??? i was hoping it would still be under warranty but that was up at 70k miles (it just turned 71k) and the extend warranty doesn't cover it either. did anyone find a DIY fix to this problem yet?
Sounds like one of the gears broke for the feeding system. There is no real DIY description here. If you have the proper tools and the know how of tearing into electronics with out damaging anything else. Open it up, look to see what is broken, call the MFG to get a part number and price and go from there. Some electronic parts can be ordered through Grainger.com. Some parts are MFG specific. The bad news is, if it is a SONY you are screwed. There parts (no matter what it is) cost more than a new unit. I have had the same problem with several cd players doing the same thing. The only ones I could not fix were Sony and Bose units.
Another thing that could be bad is that there is a actuating arm that holds the CD in place while playing and assists to eject and insert cd's. Either the arm itself could be broken or the tension belt for the arm broke. If the belt is broken and you can open it up, you can use a rubberband to fix it temporarily. Either way, it looks like you have to open it up, even just to get the CD out.
hope this gives you some idea what you are getting yourself into.

thanx for the help. i took it out lastnight to see if actually unplugging it would do anything, but nothing! why do the settings stay the same instead of resetting when unplugged? i didn't even try to take it apart in fear of breaking it more but when turned upside down (just looking at it) you can hear all the cd's falling like nothing was holding them up!? guess i'm gonna have to swap it out for a aftermarket. eh oh well. i appreciate the help!!!
factory six discs suck. they break all the time, i replace them constantly. sometimes you can take a disc you don't care about and try to lift or depress the disc that is trying to eject and work it out, but you usually have to tear the thing apart. the dodge ones do seem to hold up better than the ford junkers though

It sounds like the same problem I was having with our Durango, it was still under warranty, so I took it in and they found a CD was broke. They needed to rip it apart to get everythign out though.
