Va has a state inspection due annually. It costs either 10 or 15 bucks but generally if you buy your vehicle from one of the larger dealers they give you a free state inspection for the life of your vehicle, as long as the original buyer still owns it. In Panama there was an annual Revisado you needed to get. Where the gringos went they would inspect with a fine toothed comb and gig you for a microscopic chip in the paint, the locals (including me) would walk into a shop hand their registration and previous Revisado and then walk right out with their new Revisado without anyone even looking at their vehicle. Ahhh, the good old days.

I was wondering about that too. Here in Wake/Durham, they pound on you with the emissions scan.

trust me dude pa is the same. My jeep wrangler was in good working order I checked everything before it went and was expecting it to pass with no problems. well wasn't i just wrong lol. The guy comes out and sez that on my rear brakes the cylinders for the drum brakes were leaking. so first I say to the guy, I've had this thing for two years now and have never had to add any brake fluid too it soooooo wtf are u talking about. then he tellsme that when he pulled off the drum one of the return springs was laying in the drum. he thne told me the drum was hard to get off. I'm thinking dude u friggin broke it pullin off the drum. I got him to show me the leaking wheel cylinders and heres where I got ticked. He takes no joke a flat head screw driver and pulls back this little rubber surround on the wheel cylinder and puts the screwdriver in there. When he pulls it out it has what looks like black gunk on it. It's either grease or really old fluid. at that point I told them I wanted it put back together and get it the hell outta there shop. Talked to the jeep dealer yes the jeep dealer and they told me that it was just fine and they shouldn't have failed it. that sez something about that shop IMO.

I'm on Long Island, NY. They check everything. If you have a 95 or older, they put
it on a dyno test. 96 and newer(obdII) get the plug in deal. its about $40 per year.

I was in Virginia Beach-there they just give it a quick look over, safty inspection & you're outta there

When I was in Cali I bitched about the emissions but since coming to PA, I've learned I didn't have it that bad. We pay $50 here in Cambria Cty to have a guy put your gas cap on a machine to ensure it seals good. That's it!I'd rather they just made me buy a new one every year, it would be cheaper!! I do wish Cali had the safety inspection though considering some of the junk cars I've seen driving around.
