Possible burned out LED's or loose connection? You could remove the dash and check to see if something came loose. I'm pretty sure mine light up in my 06 (never thought about it, but never had a problem changing settings in the dark), can't speak for the 04's

yeah they do light up. I just noticed last night mine didnt but i just put a whole new audio system in so i'm sure i knocked a wire out or something. Try pulling it off and seeing if you can see any lose wires back there

Pull out the ashtray/cup holder and undo the screw(s). The rest is just clips around the edges. That what it says in my Haynes anyway. My truck is a stick so it's just all clips from what I recall.

ehhhh not on an 04

take out the 2 screws from the bottom of the panel under the steering wheel, pull out 2 clips on top of that. Then remove screw from behind that little clip on the right side. Then pull that whole center bezel out its just clipped in.
