2007 Factory Towing
Hello, I have searched this forum and online to try and get an answer for an 07' Ram QC (Hemi) I just bought.
Ok, here it goes. I assume the factory (bumper) hitch is a class III according to what I have read about this generation of Dodge...I could be wrong as well..
When I crawl under the truck, I see the typical round chassy-mounted tube that seems to be connected to the fram with 3/16 steel and 4 bolts. The plate that sits under the chrome bumper area where the ball inserts looks to be 1/4 plate.
Now, the only difference I see in the factory set ups are the 3/4 tons or bigger have the actual receiver hitch welded under the 1/4 plate which allows the hitch to protrude under the bumper plate. This (I understand) is a class IV set up.
Now here is the weird part (to me). When you look up above the tube that is the hitch, there is a (what looks to be) mini shaft that you can grab and twist back and forth. It seems the hitch connects to this? I am new to Dodge towing and am curious on what this thing is? Am I correct in the assumption this set up can tow up to 5k? The truck did not come with a tow package.
I will be flat towing my 02 Jeep and am debating getting a class IV and be done with it...but the install (due to the connection of the 'shaft' thing I spoke of) looks to be pretty tight to me (so would probably have someone do it).
Any inpute, suggestions, or links to help me out is greatly appreciated. Sorry so long winded. [8D]
Thanks!

I believe that the onlyway to havea class IV is if you are running a weight distribution hitch, I could be wrong but I went through a similar situation with my last truck. Are yourefering about the hole that is in your bumper as a class III hitch?
Yes...to the question about the bumper hole being a class III. It is actualy an opening in the bumper that when you pop off the plastic cover, you have access to the frame-mounted system I spoke of.
I will get pics shortly. Thanks for the replies.

I don't belive you hook a trailer hitch to anything that moves... thats just askin for trouble...But i have seen the moving bar... sits within a rubber housing on both ends... Was'nt sure what it was for..
Ok...here are the pics. You will notice the pic with theGreen arrow points through the chrome bumper and to a heavy metal opening that is the hitch plate. The Red arrow points to the
balance shaft thingy'. The whole packge is bolted to the frame and the bumper bolts to the hitch piece. Hope this helps...thanks.

Yea....I looked under all the 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons and did not see the 'twist bar' set up. However, all the tow hook-ups were the same-looking in regards to the tube bar and mounting...only difference is the 3/4 tons had a receiver hitch welded under the bumper...unless, of course, the 1/2 had a tow package, then it had the same receiver-factory-weld set-up.
Maybe someone will chime in on the pics soon....
