What are the facts here?

Well Pappy_FB first gives people the wrong thermostat part...
the 63 mm one without the important bypass post,
and recommends they buy it
at the large Hypertech markup price,
twice that of the
correct 64 mm thermostat with the correct bypass post
(the one for Mazdas)
that you can buy at nearly any auto parts store locally.

Then Pappy_FB posts picture of the correct thermostats
but says you don't need that bypass post
(without the bypass post 30% of the coolant doesn't go through the radiator)

Then a link is posted
to a supposed dyno test of a 180 thermostat on a 5.7 Hemi
but notice that
the dyno graph is never ever posted,
despite a promise to do so.
Wonder why?

Then Pappy_FB incorrectly tries to explain how the thermostat works

someone seems angry...i bought a stant thermo. it's the correct one...my engine runs cooler so im happy...i dont expect to see/feel a difference in performance or gas mileage... i did it just to have something to do and to allow my engine to run cooler, it does just that. At least Pappy had a sense of humor Hank. You always seem so bent on being the correct one...did you go to college?

 

The mpg gain is in his head...it's common knowledge that fuel burns more efficiently at higher temps. Hell, evenif you don't count that you'll still lose mpg because the engine will be in open loop longer. The guys that need a write-up for a stat swap are the ones claiming a gain anyway.

 

I did a 180* but for a specific reason. I have LT Headers, which tend to cause a condition that leans out the air/fuel mix. I have a Superchips Flashpaq, set to performance, which advances the timing, which also leans out the mixture. The lower temp thermostat causes a condition, much like Air Rams Powerwire, which causes the PCM to richen the mixture. We found, at my local Hemi Performance shop, that the combination brings the mixture right back on spec. Many with LT headers and a tuner report a CEL for a lean condition, and although I did not lean out that far, I enjoy the mix being dead center on spec with the 180* stat.

On paper, with the lower stat causing a slightly richened air/fuel mixture, it should be impossible to actually GAIN fuel economy, although this should cause a slight gain in performance.
I don't knowthat I'd recommend a lower temp thermostat in a bone stock truck, but I would not hesitate to install one in a vehicle with any mods that would cause the mixture to lean out, even slightly. So, I see it as a plus for anyone with Headers, or even a CAI and cat-back combo as the better "breathing" should result in a slightly leaner mix.
Also, as stated, a cooler engine (within reason!) would only be beneficialfor the longevity of that engine.

 

One can't argue with the fact that there has been a definite trend
toward higher thermostat setting temperature in Mopar V8s
it has gone from 180 in the 340
to 195 in the Magnum 5.9V8
and now to 204 in the Hemi 5.7

This has not been done for emissions control
as higher bore wall and combustion chamber temperatures
slightly increase NOx pollution...not lower it.

This is similar to the trend in compression ratio
which also slightly raises NOx pollution.

The higher temperature thermostats
are there to make the bore walls wear less
and to give slightly higher MPG.

When the cylinder bore walls are hot enough
the acids in the combustion gases don't condense out
as a corrosive "dew" that slowly eats away at the metal.
This same corrosive "dew" eats away your exhaust pipes and mufflers
if they are not stainless steel.
On a cold morning you may have seen the liquid drain out of your tailpipe.
If you have someone collect this liquid
and do a 'ph test' on it you will find out for yourself how acid it is.

When the bore walls are hotter there is another fuel economy benefit.
The hot bore walls heat up the oil on them and thin the oil out
so that it creates less friction as the piston rings rub.
This is a similar effect to running lower viscosity oil in the engine.

There is another added benefit to fuel economy
in that hotter combustion chambers and bore walls
don't 'leak away' as much heat
and that heat is the source of the pressure
that pushes the piston downward.

There is a lot of nonsense on the internet about thermostats.

To make more hp and get better fuel economy at the same time
modern engines try to keep the intake air cool (with plastic intake manifolds)
and keep the bore walls hot with high temperature thermostats.

Not many forum members will go all the way to the end of this 6 page post
but those that do
will have read the best example of the kind of nonsense

dude that is just some internet page that you copied, and that is a short "6 pages." Nobody wants to read your copied and pasted ****. I can do my own searches...in college we learned that a large percentage of stuff on the internet is not reliable...so how do you know FOR A FACT that what you just COPIED is reliable? Sure, it sounds like the guy who typed it is smart...may or may not be true. Anyhow...I did the mod, it is working like Pappy posted...I could give a **** about the environmental issues involved, and "dew" forming because my thermostat drops the engine temps by 15-20 degrees is highly unlikely in my opinion. From the nicely PASTED article, " This is a similar effect to running lower viscosity oil in the engine." Um, I use 5w20 as recommended by my owner's maual...anyway...
