Tires?
I have a 2500 SLT regular cab, long box. I need to get new tires here as mine are wearing out and seem to have a dead spot.
I really like the ones I have they are Toyo A/T open country LT285 70R17. Everything is stock for the most part on my truck. I cant afford to much, and I live in Minnesota where the weather is pretty extreme. Should I stick with these or get something else? Also I would like to go bigger. I believe these are 31 inches and I would like 33's (305 70R17). I read that I would need a lift recently to fit taller tires. Is this true? And if I had 33's would I need to make any changes as far as speedometer and or gears? Oh by the way the local tire shop says my truck is suppose to come with 265 70R17's. The truck is awesome from a distance but up close it is obvious that I need bigger tires. They just dont look right compared to the size of the beast.

i guess we need to know how big of tires you were going to run to know if you needed a lift i run bfg a/t's on mine but next set my go with nitto grapplers or bfg m/t's. the dealer made a computer adjustment on truck for me when my tranny was replaced so the larger tires and speedo were in sync with one another.

If your truck is already sitting level you can run up to a 35 inch tire.
If not, throw on a leveling kit and then go tire shopping.
From whatI understand, a 285 is taller then a 305 by like .2 of an inch. The 305 is however about an inch wider.
I run 35" in the summer and a 285 in the winter.You will lose some low end with a 35" and about 2 mpg, but I think its worth it, cause it looks great!

Well, I have been looking around and I guess the 285s are suppose to be 33 inches already. And also my truck and all the 2500s are suppose to come with 265 R70 17s. So I already have one size larger according to them. Will the larger tires really decrease mpg by 2 ??? would new gears change that? I really would like to get better mpg with these gas prices and my right foot.

In regards to your MPG loss, I guess it will depend on how your truck is set up.
With 35" tires, 3:73 gears and all my mods, the best mileage I can get is 11 mpg.
I am sure 4:56 gears would help, but even at a 2-3 mpg gain, it will take a lot of driving to make up the $1450.00 I was quoted for gears.
If mileage is your main concern, I would stick with what you have.
