Default a question about cai's

last night i was thinking, i know its a bad thing to think. but what really is the difference between all CAI's? i mean all it is, is a tube running from your TB to your air filter down my the fender well or somewhere. i know the tubes come in different sizes. i have seen 3.5 in tubes and 4in tubes. for an example, if i bought ebay tubes that are lets say 4in, and routed it the same way/place asa aem brute force CAI, and put a filter on the end of it, what would be the difference? to me it seems cheaper to buy some aluminum tubes and make my own. yes i know there are many different type of filters. im gonna stick with a K&N filter. one time i built a cai system out of pvc pipe, spray painted it black, and it actually looked pretty good.

Make your own or buy a ebay one. I had one from ebay on my old hemi and it was great. I would stay away from k&n as a lot of people say the oil eventually builds up on sensors. get a dry filter.

glad others have relized that a straw is a straw. a bit bigger is better but with speed density cant really see it maken the winning difference. if i lined up with a truck exactly as mine with the difference being his 300 dollar afe intake and my 70 ebay cai would one truck be faster than the other due to the intakes?

This is the one i bought:

As in another thread of mine, i have a ticking from the ERG valve but i guess that is normal. As for the price and construction of this intake. I am happy with it. Only thing that sucks is you need to take off the wheel well liner in order to get the stock air box frame off. Some other companies like airraid have a drop in box on top of the air box frame. But the one I have has a really nice roar when you get into the gas. I am waiting to test the gas mileage next.

I don't think there is a bit of differance. Maybe they don't do anything at all (hank... you must be wearing on me) but make more noise. And if that is all they do, then I am fine with that. I bought the shiney K&N series 77 or whatever it is... because, well, its shiney. I like shiney things. Thats just how I am. So, pick the brand you like and go with it.

In all honesty I haven't had either my Ram 1500 QC 4x4 or the Airaid CAI on it long enough to make a true, valid comparison as far as MPG is concerned, and I have no access to a dyno so I cannot say whether or not I have gotten any increase in HP.

But, it certainly feels like it has more response to the throttle, and while I seemed to be averging about 14.5-15.5 mpg prior to the CAI installation, this past tankful of fuel netted about 18.3 mpg (4.7L engine). That's driving under normal conditions and not leadfooting it whenever I feel like it (which is a lot, as that roar sounds awesome!), but not driving it like I have a mangina.

Besides, it certainly looks better than a stock airbox and that's part of the attraction.

Most seem to agree that the HP and MPG gains are minimal (if at all), I cannot honestly say, as I added my K&N 77, the day I took my truck home from getting a 4" lift. But it did "wake up" my dual exhaust sound by a few db's.
SHINNY + LOUD = GOOD
REALLY SHINNY + REALLY LOUD = BETTER
BLINDING + DEAFENING = COPS

DUB makes one that looks god, works like the rest. A polished stainless model with silicone connectors and stainless hardware, can't get much shinier then that!
