A little confused on tires...
I have an 02 Quad Cab 4x4. It has the stock 17" Steel wheels. The current tires on there now dont look nearly as aggresive as I want. I THINK they are 275/70/R17's. I want something with a deeper, more agressive tread. I have read that I can fit 305/70 without any modifications, which is exactly what I want.
I get confused when it comes to actually finding the tires to purchase. Most are listed up to 315/70, then switch to a 33' x 12.5' type measurement? I am assuming 33" is the diamter, but what is the 12.5? And why do they list them differently?
Can someone show me a decent tires that fits my description, and will fit my stock wheel? I have been looking at BFGoodrich
...I appreciate all the help, this is my first time owning a truck, so you might have to deal with some very obvious questions from me in the future

I fit 33x12.5x17's on my '04 4x4 with no lift. Cleared easily but still looked nice & full in the tire wells. This is about as big as you can go stock. I've always been a huge Mickey Thompson / Dick Cepek tire fan. Great performance if you match the tire to what you are looking for and they wear like iron. I had those 33" Mickey Thompson MTX's ( an all-terrain tire) for 29,000 miles, installed a lift, went to 35" tires and sold those MTX' looking almost still like new.
For a more aggressive tread you can try Dick Cepek Fun Country II's, (I have these now in 35x12.5x17's) a hybrid between an A/T & M/T. Great road handling, low noise on the road, great wear & still a fairly aggressive tread off road.
For a true Mud Tire the MTZ's are hard to beat, while still handling great on pavement, and if you just want a baddass tire that will rock crawl and mud better than anything out there (except maybe true boggers) then the Baja Claw is awsome.

I've got 33x12.5's Pro-comp MudTerrains on my '05 1500 4x4 with no lift. Aftermarket 17x10 wheels. Super soft tire, which is why they're great off road, just have to rotate 'em about every 5k miles to keep the fronts from cupping. The definitely fill up the fender well, and sling a crapload of whatever they've got in them all over everything. I drive down dirt roads quite a bit and have chipped the paint a little cus they throw up a bunch of stuff (that's just driving normal, it's terrible after consuming some concentrated beverages).
Ok, thanks for all the help guys.
So a 305/70/17 tire should fit fine on my stock 17's, correct?
I havent checked the width of my wheels yet, but they are the same as in the above picture Chopperzen posted.
