A little search might yield great results from time to time. This topic has been discussed more than once.

I change mine every 3000 miles. I know a lot of the synthetic users think the same way. As one member put it, it's like having cheap insurance on your engine (as opposed to buying a new engine). If you are confused about the numbers you might have wanted a poll for the oil change intervals.

Besides, the numbers across the board are going to be here too. No one will have the same opinion on the intervals of oil changes. If you think you can be get by with less frequent oil changes you're the one who will have to justify why you did this if you blow an engine and want to have it covered under warranty. Stick with what it says in the manual for oil changes and you're golden.

I change it every 3,000 miles whether it's synthetic or conventional.

I find this comment funny. Not picking on YOU specifically, Mojave, but if you're spending money for a product that's designed to not only out live conventional dino oil, then why change it at conventional time frames?

The whole purpose of Synthetic oil is it's longevity over conventional oil and it's ability to provide lubrication qualities long after dino oil is spent, and yet be capable of better heat reduction, and reduce molecule shearing, reducing viscosity.

Our County garage changes oil on our cars/trucks every 4K, and uses conventional oil. The vehicles are driven to 150K, before they're sent off to auction and we have hadNO engine failures in the last 10 years. (I asked)

I've personally owned 3 vehicles with 155K+ miles, and changed conventional oil at 4K intervals, with no engine/bearing failures.

HOW you drive your vehicle has as much to do with the life of the engine as what oil you put in it, and I haven't seen one post here, entitled, "Do you beat the snot out of your truck and were you surprized when it took a crap?"

Normal, regular servicing is key in the life of a vehicle, but how it's driven and serviced is another. Short, 10-20 minute trips and you need to change oil more frequently. Highway driving and less stop and go driving, oil lasts longer.

Paying $5-6 a qt for Synthetic oil and tossing it at 3K miles is a waste of time and money, IMHO. Testing has clearly shown that at 10K, Synthetic oil still has better properties then conventional oil that's NEW. Not that I'd drive it to 10K but I do drive it to 5K before changing it out.

You bring up some valid points on oil but if you're using regular oil and telling him to change his synthetic oil every 10k miles but you have no experience with this nor will you have to pay out of your pocket if you are wrong. I know unfailingly I could change less frequently than every 3k miles but I choose not to put my oil above and beyond what it was intended to go through. I would rather waste a few dollars more every oil change and know no matter what I put my engine through it will not fail as a result of the oil.

I never said for him to drive to 10K on Synthetic oil. I DID say that testing shows......yadda, yadda, yadda.

I drive to 5K.....

The only reason I only drive THAT far, is oil's job isn't only to lubricate, but to hold dirt and impurities, so they come out of the engine at oil change time. Oil also becomes acidic, or a higher Ph level, and becomes corrosive to bearing surfaces.

Even the highest grade filter doesn't stop that....
