Default Mega Cab owners....

Anyone has the 4.10 axle with the hemi? Does it have some pep? Looking to pull the trigger on a 1500 mega cab. But, undecided on 3.73 or 4.10? Anyone knows the mpg difference between the two? After reading posts, I can expect 10-12 in city and 14-15 highway. I can live with that, but what about the 4.10 axle? Any help is appreciated!!

I would stick with the 3.73 on the hemi. It causes about 1.5-2.5 mpg loss. And it isnt REALLY needed unless you doalot oftowing.

I looked and looked for the 4.10 and could not find one. At the time it was too late to order one. You towing a lot?

I tow a 5,000 pound boattwice a weekfor 3 months (175 mile round trip). I tow a 2500 pound boat every weekend during hunting season for 3 months (100 mile round trip). So, six months of the year I tow a boat. Not everyday though. Would the 3.73 gears suffice for my needs? I have the 4.7L now but looking to take some burden off it. It is rated for 6,300 pounds. The 3.73 1500 mega is rated 7,800 pounds.

That's a fairly good bit of towing, IMO you should get the 4.10's, yea maybe you'll lose 1-1.5 mpg at 70 mph and up, but you'll have better performance towing, less gear shifting on uneven terrain and most importantly, over the long haul, you'll buy less trannies!!!

Oh, and if larger than stock tires are in your future, you would have really wished you got the 4.10's when you bought the truck...

Why dont you just get a cummins then. You seem to do an awful lot of towing, so a 3.73 cummins would be perfect.

Dude, you have a V8 CTD? I thought CTD's were Inline 6's...

I have an 06 Mega 2500 CTD with 4.10s. Your mileage is going to be terrible towing with the Hemi either way. If you can handle the initial cost, strongly consider the CTD.

I am new to all this forum stuff So I am looking for some advise. Here real soon I will be buying a new 08 mega cab. with all the bells and whistles that I can get on it. I am think I am pretty set on the cummings 6..7L. If any one can tell me what the pro and cons are on what I should get and what not. Plus Iam looking to do lots of mods. So I am looking for advise there. also looking for places to look for stuff and stuff to read up on. For example what mods to improve miles per gallon and to improve power. Thanks

Not to specifically contradict squirtbottle09, but I disagree on the fuel mileage loss with the lower gears. While I don't have a mega-cab (just a quad cab 2500), I went from the 3.73's to 4.56's (larger tires as well) and noticed an improvement in mileage around town, and up to about 70MPH about the same mileage. Granted I baby the truck most of the time, but still, if you go with a "gasser" instead of an "oil burner" I wouldn't dream of having that heavy of a truck that you plan to tow with, without at least 4.10's. And as another poster said, if you put larger tires on in the future you'll really wish you had the lower gears (that was the "kicker" for me, went up in tire size and couldn't stand how dogged my truck felt so in went 4.56's).

On the second part, as squirtbottle09 said, if your gonna tow that much a CTD is definately the way to go. My '05 has only 15K miles on it (it's a weekend warrior at best) so a CTD was just more cost for something I don't drive much. But if your gonna run it like you describe a CTD is IMO the best choice...

Regarding the new 6.7L CTD, my "oil burner" buddies are on the fence on the new CTD's. They say they are nice, but function much like an oversized self-cleaning oven to burn out soot....there's allot of debate going on in other diesel specific forums about if this hurts power, can you turn it off, etc....If it were me, I'd maybe wait 6 - 12 months and see what the common thought it on it after folks have had at them for a little longer....just my measily $0.02 worth
