I have a 2004 Ram Hemi with the 20" Hemi rims. When I tap on the rims there seems to be a plastic wheel cover that gives it the shine. I just bought 4 more on eBay and 2 came with the "plastic" cover and 2 came without. Does anyone have any experience with these? I would like to take the covers off to get 4 matching rims. My dealer says that this is a chrome cladding that cannot be removed. Likewise the parts people.

From what I can tell, some years had "chrome cladding" which is actually a plastic cover over a steel wheel. Others (like mine) appear to be solid metal - I assume aluminum but can't be too sure. I do know that mine sound like solid metal when I tap them, and I can't see a seam anywhere the plastic would end.

 

well the new body style 02' and 03's have the real wheels but i wouldnt worry about them looking different.

 

yeah they quit makin the "real" chromies like mid '03 and ever since then they have been the "plastic" covers

 

is it at least an aluminum wheel under the plastic or is it a junky steely??

wait you mean the 20 inch chrome clad wheels that are a 1400 dollar option are a steely underneath the plastic bs. wow that seems like a rip off for 1400 when you can get the same wheel in aluminum for 900. that's off the dodge site if i remember them correctly. o well they have crummy rims everything else is great.

 

They never made a 20"chrome without the plastic cover. The 20" that sort of looks like chrome that is not plastic is a polished wheel. The shine is not quite like chrome.

In the polished pic you can see the person taking the pic, but not to well, if it were chrome you could make this person out much better.

And no, you can not pull the plastic off and expect a polished rim underneath.

 

ok i know for sure that the 06- rams sound like this, u tap on em and it sounds like plastic..i tried pulling them off once at the dealership i work at but that was a dumbass idea....

 

i was pretty sure the were "real" chromies until mid 03? i'm gonna ask monday at work lol
