It's possible the original owner may have stiffened up the rear, possibly to accomodate heavy loads. You may very well find you have aftermarket leafs, or maybe add-a-leafs.
Put some good weight (a hundred fifty pounds should do) in the bed, right over the rear axle, take it for a ride. If this gets rid of the problem, then you are too stiff with no load in the truck.

it's got 60k on it and when I moved a washer, dryer, and sofa in it the truck smoothed out nicely. I was doing like 85 and no hopping, but unloaded it rides worse than my 79 chevrolet SWB 4x4. I have no idea about the previous history though. It even rides smooth with a full tank of gas

Im going to agree with the other guys. Sounds like the suspension has been adjusted. Just get under there and look for anything that looks altered or different. If you have a digital camera take some good pics and some of us can crawl under ours and compare and see if we can narrow it down.
