Default Groaning from rear

I've got 2 noises coming from my 2004 Ram 1500 QC 4x4. The first is a groaning noise that comes from the reat under acceleration. Sounds just like the issue GM used to have with fullsize trucks that required the driveshaft slip yoke to be lubricated. There's a TSB for a similar noise for trucks with the 2-piece driveshaft but I have the 1-piece shaft.

The second noise sounds/feels like there is something loose under the truck when going over bumps.

Any ideas?

If the rear is groaning, and it's a Limited Slip Differential, (LSD) you may have aclutch pack retaining clip that's broken, turned and is scraping the inside of the housing, creating a sparkly, milky cocktail of metal chips and differential fluid.

Take it for a drive, and pop the rubber plug on the rear diff cover, and stick your finger in and hold your now, oily finger up to the sunlight, and see if it's all sparkly.......

Second thing, is if the truck ever had the forever-leaking pinion seal replaced, and the mechanic ran the nut on with an airgun, and didn't properly set the rear up, causing a failure there.

I'll wait........ go ahead and look......

..let me ask you this (while wer waitin..hehe) , whenever I drive over 50..and then let off the gas, I get a quick buzz sound.... and then accelerate, quick buzz sound again....does it sound like the gears need adjustment? had 4.56's installed about a month ago...

yeah i'd take it somewhere else...i did the gears on my truck and don't have any sound out of em at all....

and oldmoparman is right, if you've had a pinion seal replaced then you best be getting it looked at because thats what happened to me...maybe he stole this from me lol...but yeah pull the plug, check how the fluid looks and report back

OMM,

Thanks. I don't know if it's got a LSD although I doubt it does because I'm always spinning the inside tire when accelerating around a turn. Is there anywhere besides the glovebox where I could find RPO codes? I looked in the glovebox and under the hood and can't find a sticker with codes.

I'll stick a finger in her rear tomorrow and see what comes out... :-)

You got enough guesses on the first noise, so I'm gonna take a stab on the second one, the something loose going over bumps. Check your spare tire holder under the bed. Mine worked it's way a little lose, not near enough to worry about the spare falling off, but enough to bounce up & down going over bumps to make me get underneath checking for something loose.
Could also be an exhaust hanger broke and the pipe is banging.

I checked out the exhaust this afternoon and the hangers look good but I didn't check the spare tire. I'll check that tomorrow.

Thanks.
