Tuner effective throttle range?
I recently read a post from HankL regarding tuners and how they work with our trucks. If I'm not missing the point he was making than it was something like this:Per EPA regulations, tuners don't affect your truck at all until you reach 80% of wide open. So, all that highway driving and normal city driving are completely unaffected by a tuner. I'm not trying to poke at HankL, I would just love some clarification on this. If this is true, I will have a tuner for sale in the near future. The amount of time I spend at 80%+ throttle doesn't justify a tuner. I understand that there are other things that will have affect at all throttle ranges such as CAI, exhaust, cam, etc. I just want to know for sure whether or not my tuner is worth keeping. I know that there are potentially a large number of opinions on this, but I need simple facts. My truck "feels" like it has more power, but I may be wrong. Thanks.
I almost never see 80% throttle. I bought mine for MPG, and it has increased that fairly dramatically. I'm happy.
The way HankL describes it, there is almost no aftermarket part that will improve on what the factory does.
I guess that's why the 4.7l this year is 305 hp, and the first ones were 230hp. Yup, can't improve on that ole 230hp, can we?
LOL!

I place about as much value on hisadvice as I would on recycled blinker fluid.

Try returning your truck to stock and test it. See if your truck acts different without it with the way you normally drive.
I bought a tuner and can't wait to try it. It should be here this week.
