Is the 4.7L engine any good in a 2002 Ram 1500 quad cab?

if it was me and knowing what i know...i'd stay away from the 6.7 for another yr or so...take it for what you will....i would look for a 5.9 CTD, theres alot of em around and aftermarket performance mods can be found damn near every place

I would agree more with staying away from the 6.7 but on the CTD forum there have been hardly any problems. most of them just needed a flash to change a few things and now they run great. so i wouldn't be too afraid to get a 6.7 but you do need to watch out a bit/

I can't help saying it. Those towing truck backwards videos are stupid. I thought it when I saw the Tundra"outpull" theRam and I still think it when I see a cummins "outpull" a powerstroke. There are too many variables.
Anyway, I think the 4.7L is a good engine. My old work truckhad it, pretty good power. I think it depends on what you are gonna use it for. If you're gonna betowing very much, I wouldthink about atleast the 5.9L but probably the Hemi.
Also, seeing as how Dodge doesn't make the Cummins and Ford doesn't make the Powerstroke, the arguments over what is the better truck seems a little odd.

I don't know squat compared to HemiYellow, but have several buddies who are hard core "oil burner" guys who have all said the same thing. The 6.7L isn't bad, or hasn't to their knowledge come up with any major issues, but the "self cleaning oven" as they've dubbed it does have lots of emissions related issues.
As far as the 4.7, my personal opinion is that it's a better small V8 than is offered by the competitors. I had one in a 2K Dakota, it was fine, no problems and was "adequate" on power. That said, my father's '98 1500 w/a 5.2 would out-pull and out gun it without too much trouble despite the differences on paper. That was really my only problem with it, it was "adequate"....I didn't get an ear-to-ear grin when I mashed the go pedal, but it never left me on the side of the road. When I traded in for the Hemi powered Ram I was floored at the difference in power (Hemi was waaaaaay better). The other thing that sorta shocked me was that I could go to a much heavier vehicle (from a Dakota to the 3/4 ton pickup), with a hungrier engine and end up not that far off in terms of gas mileage (okay so I drive like a grandpa most of the time but still...).....
All of these words to say my personal opinion would be to find a couple year old Hemi or 5.9L CTD if you pull allot. If the 4.7L 1500 is too good to pass up you'll probably have a good truck, but without going to town on it probably never be all that wowed by it either...

My very good hunting buddy works for the town he lives in. They have a couple 5.9 CTD's that are like an '02 & '05 along with a '05 Duramax. Based on the way the CTD's outperforms the Chevy, they bought two 6.7's this year. He says they are down more than they are up. But always for PCM problems, delership says it's the emission tuning. They have flashed them once already and are supposedly waiting for Chrysler to get them another PCM update to fix the problem.
