Default stuck in 4 wheel drive

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 4x4 - and had to put it in 4 wheel drive to keep from sliding in the rain. That was 2 weeks ago. Well it won't disengage. I was told to just put it in reverse and just drive it backwards until it comes out.
It has 130k and I can not afford to take it to the shop just yet. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Have you tried shifting into 4 low, drive a few feet and then shifting back to 2wd? Are you sure it's still in 4x4, and it's not just the sensor thinks it is so the indicator light is on?

I tried that. You can really only drive now in 4low. It grinds terribly in 2w. It needed a new transmission at 24K and the power steering & rack in pion went at 30K - it was good until 95K when the rear differential went. The A/C just went at 120K. So I'm kinda of done putting $$$ in it.

I may be WAY off here, I had this problem with my 92 Blazer back in the day, turned out to be clogged vacuum hoses. Might be worth checking...

You're in 4 low and not 4 high? If so, it always grinds going from 4lo to 2hi. You're supposed to pull it semi-quick from 4low to 2hi while rolling 2-4 mph.

bwhite757 - these trucks don't use the thermostatic type switches to engage 4wd like the GM products of the 90s did. My last truck was a 92 GMC 4wd that had only 105k miles when I sold it earlier this year.
