Default Gears

With my upcoming mods in a couple weeks taking it from stock to 6" fabtech suspension lift, BFG AT 315 70 17 will my stock gears be fine or should I upgrade? How big of a difference will it be if I upgraded or is it just easier to leave that alone? I don't know very much on this but I am noticing that others on here that get the bigger tires are also changing their gears.

You will want at least 4.10's With that size tire, i would reccomend the 4.56's. Youll need two sets one for the front/one for the rear. and two master install kits. It wont be cheap.

First things first. Is your truck a 4x4 or 4x2?

Your stock gears will work - but you will notice the difference - the strain on your drivetrain pushing the extra tire will be noticeable - your gas mileage will obviosly drop but with a regear to 4.56's you would probably gain what you lost in mpg.- but they will work - I would guess you either have 3.73 or 3.93 - either way I would go to 4.56's - I will be when I got the dough. Where are you located? You may or may not need the master install kit - when you find an installer go off of their recommendation - I knowfolks that have done a regear at 40k miles and didn't get the master install kit - just go by what your installer
recommends.

If it's a 4x2 RC, then it probably is a 3.55. Not only will you have VERY degraded performance with that gearing with a tire that large, but long term effects on the transmission would not be good at all. For that matter, the engine running at higher rpm's at a given speed will add to wear there as well, not to mention, hotter oil, etc. So, basically, if you add those bigger meats without doing a gear swap, not only will you hate the performance, but you could also be cutting down on powertrain component life as well.
You'll want a minimum of a 4.10 or better yet a 4.56 gearset in there. As a 4x2, you would only need a set for your rear diff.& a master install kit.Ballpark prices are about $225-$250 for the gears and about $75 for a master install kit with Timken bearings.

where would I get gears installed? I Guess I need to get this done too. I had thought that I could wait to get new ones installed. Could goodyear do something like this for me? or the dealership?

I would call around - who is doing your lift - if you are taking it to a shop they should be able to do it there - but do alot of price comparisons - I would not go to the dealership.

I am having it installed at the dealership, they are charging me 300 dollars to do the lift. It wouldn't be that much more to have the gears done there. I just need to get money to buy them now. ****
