subwoofer boxes, air space, subs etc
ok guys heres the deal, i know there has been some discussion i a couple of threads about sound systems, and i made a therad about mounting the amps.
well i want to make a seperate thread about this to nail it on the head.
sub boxes. my truck is fully wired and ready to go. i just need to plug in a sub box. my first choice was the JL audio stealthbox that goes underneath the rear pass seat. but its insanely expensive and id rather prob get just the double one that could be louder and less expensive.
what are some tried and true box/sub combinations. im not looking to blow out my subs in the first few months. a buddy of mine has 2 10's he can sell me, so if i could find a box that WILL fit (a friend of mine bought an ebay box that he had to trim) and i know the specs and airspace in it, then i can match it up.

It's not just that simple. You have to build a box to the specs of that sub. The JL box may be expensive but you are not going to find anything that will out do it. You can't find a better sub than a JL period. I'm no JL ***. I have been building sub inclosueres for a better part of half my life. I'm 34 now. I have owned well over a hundred subs myself. I would buy the JL and be done with it. If you can't do it, then find out what 10's your buddy has and I will do my best to find the specs and enclosure size it needs. Remember, you can't just put any speaker in any box. Some 10's need 2 cubic feet each plus the displacement for the port. Good Luck.
thank god for this thread. i found someone selling two 12' solo barics and i was wondering if i could make it work with custom boxes and stuff... i only wanted to put one in... and it doesnt seem like there is not enough cubic feet (or inches) in there to make it work.
i want a REALLY nice sub setup... something that hits hard, but not too loud (dont know if that makes sense)... basically something for the driver to enjoy, and not anyone outside of the car...
i have been thinking about getting a JL sub for some time but i dont know too many people with them. ive had kickers in almost every car that ive owned but they were just a bit loud and unless i have a great amp they never sounded that great.
on my setupi dont want to spend more than 300 dollars with the sub, box, amp, and maybe a crossover... i kinda figured with that budget id be buying alot of stuff used but thats fine with me

i was leaning toward forking out the cash for the JL because i figure they match up their box and the sub pretty well. so its pretty efficient. and i still have the other side to store stuff and have space to carry stuff. i use my truck alot fo r hualing crap around
the subs my friend has are 2 10' alphasonik dual voice coil 400 series. they are a little bit older.
You can try pioneer shallow subs on a regular box. Since you dont have that much space under the rear seats, a box with those speakers may sound nice.

I agree, if you have the time, knowledge, ability, patience, and resources, I would make my own box. Since I suck, i just bought the prefab Fox Acoustics dual 10" fox box. It has almost 2cuft of airspace, fits great under the seats, and sounds nice. I put 2 w6's in it, and it is loud.I have done a lot of other work to my truck to make it sound clean and balanced though.
I would definately have better bass if I built my own box, but for the price ($150 after shipping) it is a solid box. I don't lose any seating (and women love to sit in the back seat.....) Just my 2 cents...

I guess that i just lucked out. I bought a shallow sub, the Pioneer described above, and an amp from a local shop that does awesome work and the guy threw in a custom made box, made for two of these subs, that he originally built for a mega cab before the customer changed his mind about were he wanted them! The sub sounds great and the box fits without having to raise the seat at all. Now I just need to find the cash to buy another sub and put it in the other side! I had resigned myself to buying a standard box for a regular sub and just using some c-channel to build up the rear seat far enought to clear the box. I estimated that it would take more time to build my box and install the amp/sub in the truck than it would to just buy the box and raise the seat. Opportunity costs are also important to me, is it worth it to spend the time when I could be doing something more fruitful or important? Go find an install shop and see if they might have a box that will work in your truck and meets your sub's requirments, might be a long shot but it doesn't take much time.
