sludge
Sound theory, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible. But this guys problem is out of my area, so I have not responded. I'm just an old 4x4 off road guy with 20+ years of 4x4'sand lifted trucks. I'm more of a bolt on mod & lift kit guy. I leave the actual engine innards to the real mechanics. My pop wasone, and my uncle retired a 38 year Chrysler mechanic, but with me it's just a hobby.
One thing I do know though, is next time he changes the oil, he's got to drop the pan. This is the only way he'll know if he's just sloshing around the old sludge or he's starting clean and making sludge as he goes. If it's the latter, then he can start looking at your theory...
THERE IS SOMETHING ELSEGOING ON HERE OTHER THAN THE OBVIOUS.
Make sure you are getting proper crankcase ventlation
Do a leak down test on the cooling system.
Sounds to me like he's getting antifreeze in the oil for whatever reason and its sludging up, possibly due to short driving distance. Excessive water in the oil will destroy an iron pump in short order.
Also change gas stations. If you use the same one religously, you may be getting some kind of contamination from the fuel thats draining past the rings into your oil causing the sludge ( I know this is a stretch, just brainstorming for causes).
Also, are the any PCM codes being stored---maybe check this first!!!!
