Default Why do you use synthetic oil

I see eveyone talking about when to switch, but I was curious about why to switch. What do you gain? What would you loose?

I find mobil one helps me get better milage and will add a small degree of H/p due to less friction and I find the oil stays cleaner longer than dino oil.

AS long as your maintain your truck with dino oil or syn oil, oil changes when oil is dirty, the hemi will go stay running a long time.

It is said syn oil is a better lubercating oil at colder/hotter temps, I'm self employed and the extra cost's of syn oil over the life of my truck don't really cost more me more than dino oil and I can write off my maintance expenses.

" One of the major differences between conventional and synthetic oils is that synthetics are treated with more additives that protect your engine for a longer amount of time before you have to change it. Mentioning that they also last longer in hotter conditions and won’t “gel" in colder ones, like conventional oil. In other words, synthetics have more additives, which greatly protect the car from viscosity breakdown. They are designed to withstand temperature extremes. It may be safe to say that extreme driving conditions call for the use of synthetics."

With normal everyday driving, perhaps conventional oils work best for you. You aren’t driving in extreme conditions and you swear allegiance to regular oil. That may be fine. Synthetic oil cannot really offer you anything that conventional oil cannot under normal operating conditions. However, the definition of extreme driving states that if you do a lot of short driving (two to twenty miles) daily, it’s hard on your car. And, specialists agree that this constitutes extreme driving due to the faster breakdown of the structure of conventional oil.

But, the wonderful thing is that you don’t have to change your oil every 3,000 miles recommended with conventional oil use. In fact, you may not have to change it until well after 25,000 and up to 50,000 miles as long as the oil filter is changed every 10,000 miles. So, the cost at first might scare consumers away, but the long-term benefits of synthetic oil use are substantial. However, you will still have to be responsible for your car’s maintenance check-up every 3,000 miles or so. With regular oil-changes, you are automatically checking over the car for other problems"

K i have never hear that you dont have to change your oil as often with synthetic oils !! I have been to pennzoil / QS oil traing seminars and they always told us to stay with what the manufacturer recomended. If dodge says 5000 km then 5000 km is when you should change your oil .How would you get warranty on anything if they came to you and said , when was the last time you changed your oil ? 20000-50000 miles ago ! Sure a good synthetic oil might last that long but I would not want to leave any oil in my vehicle for 50000 miles . just my opinion

My opinion is that the Mobil One syn oil is more resistant to 'coking'
which builds up carbon deposits on the top ring groove of the piston.

This resistance to coking is most important to engines with turbos
where coking at the bearings
especially after a quick hot engine with turbo shutdown
can do extensive damage.

First off, let's be all on the same page. Syn oil does not stay "cleaner" than petro oil as far as outside contamination is concerned. Engine blow-by, etc. will affect syn oil just as much as petro oil. But in truth, such problems are minimal at best in a well-maintained engine.

So what benefit does syn oil really have? Quite a bit. Syn oil only contains the oil molecules necessary for lubrication and additives for cleaning, foaming, etc. It does not contain the contaminants found in petro oil that cannot be totally removed during the refining process. Therefore, it has almost a 0% percent chance of causing sludge or carbon build-up like petro oil can. In essence, there is nothing in syn oil to wear out as long as the engine doesn't suffer severe overheating. If the oil is kept clean, it will last basically forever.

Of course, even the best oil filters cannot keep oil 100% clean after months and thousands of miles of use. But on average, you can run syn oil at least twice as long as petro oil without worry. I used to change my oil every 10,000 miles in my Ford Ranger (I drove 160 miles a day commuting), and at 110,000 miles I dropped my oil pan and the bottom end looked like it just left Dearborn.

To me, syn oil is the only way to go. Mobil 1, Amsoil and Royal Purple are all great syn oils.

I put in Royal Purple yesterday with a K&N oil filter (it is actually purple, how did I not see that coming...LOL). I feel the engine running more smoothly now. I paid a total of $62 for the oil and filter.

Over the life of theRP, itwill be less expensive than the 2 oil changes would have cost me if I would have gone somewhere and had them use regular Dino oil. I think I am going to be very happy with my transition to Syn...

I thought I read or heard somewhere that syn oil uses the same detergents as convential oil, so even though the oil itself lasts longer, the detergents still break down at the same rate, hence the need to change oil just as often? What's the consus here, or what have you heard?

That is why if you are under warranty, you stick to the 3k changes.....

If not, you can go longer......I dont know about 50,000, but you can definitely go longer than 3k

The gentleman at the parts store said that I can be comfortable going 7K between oil changes... I am not completely cofident in his knowledge, though.
