I switched from 20's to 17's. Of course I also put 35" tires on at the same time so I cannot tell you about ride difference. Sorry. I switched because I prefer sidewall to aluminium or steel. That is a personal preference though.

Apples to apples, 17's ride better than 20's with same amount of rubber? That doesn't make sense to me. I can see where power might be improved with smaller wheels, and I can see where off roading would be better with BIG tires, but on the highway with the same amount of rubber I can't help but think the 20's would roll much nicer. For my uses I'll stick with my 20's, though I won't mind replacing my stock tires with something a little nicer when the time comes.

^ How would it be the same ammount of rubber?????

When you go down in rim size you get more sidewall.....hence MORE sidewall rubber which usually = a smoother ride.

I went from the 20's on my '05 to 17" Pro Comp wheels and 33" A/T tires. MUCH better ride, response, and handling. The stock Goodyear tires were CRAP. A/T tires inspire so much more confidence when driving now.
