Truck Alarms And Your Experiences
Ok i know i am going to get a lot of different feedback on types and options, so let me narrow down some things.
I am looking for a mid-range price alarm with nothing fancy. Just your impact, window, and door detection, and kill switch. Dont need the remote start or paging system...
I have done some background work and ruled out bulldog systems because its been about 95-5 percent bad. Got Viper or python on the list..
What is your personal experience with alarms on the Ram 1500? Any you really like or stand out as reliable (ie. no false alarms)?
Now i know alarms will not deter everything but it sure will give me enough time to slap a clip into the ol' sig and get off a few shots before the person(s) are out of range and i have to move over to the 308.

I have a lab, but i think the dog would lick the person to death and watch the guy take things from the truck. Heck the dog may even stay in the truck and go with the person should they decide to take the entire truck.
There is nothing really special about my truck.. i just want to give some second thoughts to a person wanting to smash a window in or take the stock radio, airbag, etc.

I have a Hornet system, which is similar to the Viper. However, I have the paging system one, think it was about $250 at my local car audio shop installed. As far as the brand is concerned, I think Hornet is just as good as any of the others. If I was you, I would make sure to get one of those flashing LED's installed no matter what you go with. I have the bluebulb and you can see it from a mile away, no joke. I think the more you show that there is something in there protecting it, the better off you'll be. Let's face it, if people want our trucks, there is really nothing we can do about it. You can do as much anti-theft protection you want, but the sad truth is, if they want it bad enough they can get it. Just do all you can to deter them and make them want to target another vehicle.
honestly it's a waste of money if you don't get oen with a two way remote. because alarms don't scare of crooks. what does is when u get the beep from the remote and go out there to see and then they run. unless you hear the siren depending on where u r in relation to the vehicle.
a good one woudl be the python 871xp. it's like 300 bucks installed. it does have remstart and keyless if you wnat but you don't have too hook them up. it's actually easier when you dont. because all the remstart stuff is on a seperate box from the brain of the alarm. remstart is just glorified hotwireing of the vehicle lol.
door locks arn't hard too hook up either. i mean i think the ram has negative pulse locks which are as simple as splicing in two wires. if not then you have to use a relay to switch from a negative to a positive 12 volt trigger. no big deal.
when i get my new truck i'm getting the viper 7900 with gps tracking. gonna set me back 1500 bucks but i don't care. it's alarm, remstart, keyless, and with the gps tracking if anyone does take it you cna get it back no problem. plus if lets say someone borrows ur truck. you can get the gps unit to text ur phone if they drive the thing at a mph speed above what you think is safe for mroe than lets say 5 seconds. i find that to be sickkkkkkk

i am really starting to rethink that whole page back/two way remote deal. I would love to get a notice and then place that red dot on some unsuspecting person by my truck. At least they would be leaving a trail for me to hunt them down after pissing their pants. Ha.
The keyless door feature is another option that does not sound bad. Since I hunt a lot the cold weather does not bother me much so i don't see much use in a remote starter.
I also agree that putting a flashing light on the dash would present some second thoughts about a break-in. Part of me would just love to rig up a flashing light to the dash and call it done but I would wake up the next morning with a busted window and a flashing light still.

Wait So My Viper System DOESN'T Have A Real Viper?????? That Sucks... Whatta Downer.
To Be Honest With You.. I have Been An Electronics Gu-rooo With All My Vehicles, And It's Not About What Flashy Name You buy... Majority Is Owned By Directed Eletronics Inc. (DEI) Out Of All The Systems I Have Had Believe It Or Not (but This Works Better When You Believe Me) I Have Had My Viper 790XV In 2 Vehicles. Ever Heard A Retailer Say "When You Sell Your Vehicle We Will Remove It For Free." ? Well I Actually Did That An The Took It Out Of My Jeep Grand Cherokee and Put It In My Ram. They Charged Me To Re Install It.
Now For The Part That Gives My .02 - I Posted A Thread In The AV Part On The Mainpage That Is What Made Me Believe In DEI... Here's The Link.

SO Past The Inital Purchase 7 Years Later They Pretty Much Saved Me The Purchase of A New System.
Hope That Helps - Like Ben D. Said - With The New Technology, The Only Way To Go Is With The Two Way Remote... No More Standing by The Window And CHecking If It Started.. Or Hopeing It Started. And The Whole Purpose Is To Have It Stop Someone From Breaking Into Your Rig.. Well What Better Way Then To Have It Tell You On Your Remote.
Peace of Mind Tends To Lead To Sanity!

P.S. - During The "Non - Hunting" Season I Let Them Get A Half Mile Away And Then They Get The Taist of The Tactical 30-06 - Thats The Only Action It Gets Then.

I am still planing on getting an alarm. I wanted one with a pager.
I was talking to a guy that use to install alarms. Told him what I was thinking. He said he didn't like the pager setups. He said because if the pager goes off you will run like a mad man to see what's happening to your truck. They(robbers) will either run when it goes off or they are packing a gun. If you don't have a gun with you, your in trouble. He also said like if your at the mall it might not work and if your at home or close by your going to hear it.
To me this made alot of sense.

yes python and viper are both dei. I see what ur sayign mutt but if they are gettting their gun ready they are still gonna be breaking into ur vehicle. so you'd be better off without one in that case. because honestly the sounds from the alarm don't scare true crooks IMO. mebbe some punk *** 16 yr olds will run at the sound of a siren but most others won't.
ya need the two way so you can at least call the police from inside the safety of ur home. if you don't want to go out and look at it.
Petz, most security systems come with remstart and keyless capability as well. hooking up remstart and keyless isn't too hard on most vehicles. honestly remstart is just hotwiring a car. you splice the unit into constant 12v and then wire it up to ignition, acc, starter. the unit then sends the 12volts out to each in order and starts the car. they honestly arn't that complicated. most ppl ask how does the remstart know when the vehicles is running so it doesn't break the starter. well simple. when ur car starts all voltage in the vehicle will jump from 12v to 14.4v. the system registers this change and shuts down.
here is the system i recommend. not super high end but not bad either. it's made by python (backed by lifetime warranty) it's their 871xp. where I work we will install this in a vehicle for about 400 bucks. thats total price of unit plus install. 400 out the door you coudl say.

if you wnated a bit more you could go up to the python 990 which is the same as 871xp but it has a LCD remote that has basically a diagram of the vehicle. tells you everything what doors are open if any. really nice. about 600 installed usually where I work.
