?????Strange Noise???????
Tonight while driving home, I kept hearing this strange noise coming from the rear passenger side of the truck. Kind of hard to explain the sound, but it sounded like metal being drug across concrete..... it wasn't constant, just every now and then while accelerating. It didn't happen every time i took off either. looked under the truck to see if anything was rubbing or anything saw nothing. I just had my magnaflow put on last week, and i hav ethe rectangular tips coming out of the sides. does anyone have any idea what the sound might be?
Strictly a guess, but some part of the exhaust contacting a body or suspension part? The engine twists under torque, moving the exhaust enough to bring it in contact with something underneath.
Should i take it to the dealership or back to the muffler shop? i can't figure out what to do to make it make the noise. idoes it completely at random. i just went back out and rode around and it only made the sound once while taking off. my pipes exitstraight outthe side behind the tires.
OK, I took my truck to the shop that put my pipes on and they drove it and told me that the noise was caused by wind blowing across the tips of the exhaust. I think that sounds like BS, but hey, I could be wrong. Does anyone else have any input on this. It is really starting to get annoying. I hear it more at night though, seems like the colder it gets the more i hear it.
Yeah, there's some "wind" blowing alright. If that's what it is, then it'll do it with truck coasting in neutral. Metal dragged across concrete won't sound like wind blowing across the pipe ends. THAT would sound like someone blowing across the top of a bottle.
I kinda have the same noise, my truck is brand new 2500. I first noticed the noise when i was in tow haul mode going up a hill on my way to install my leveling kit air bags tires and rims didn't really think nothing of it. I put all my stuff on the truck and still noticed it. More in tow haul mode or when going slow up a hill. It also makes the same noise when turning very sharp both ways like in a circle. I talked to three dealers nobody has heard of it. My tires are not rubbing its the same set up I had on my diesel. I am thinking its the anti-spin diff or sometimes it almost sounds like a muffler bracket vibrating. i can't get it to repeat the noise all the time but its driving me nuts thinking something is wrong with a truck that has 600 miles on it.
There was a thread about this recently, with a similar title. I remember having this "chain=dragging" sound in my 03 Dak, especially when towing a trailer.

as far as the noise, have you guys done any transmission or gear work in the truck? in my mustang when i had 4.30's put in they were done incorrectly and it was a whine with a metal grinding sound..??
The only thing i have done to my truck is the exhaust. and now that mikehtalley mentions it, it does sound kind of like someone blowing across the top of a bottle, just much louder. i cannot get mine to repeat either, i am thinking aboout trying some different tips, but i like th eones i have.

OK, now this is really starting to **** me off. Went back to the exhaust shop and they tell me it was a clearance issue, put the truck on the rack, kept me there until after closing time. Didn't charge me anything but took too long for them to do nothing. I get almost all the way home and the sound is still there. Sounds like metal dragging. Not constant, but when I accelerate, mostly between 2000 and 2500 rpms. I have been to other shops and they have told me it was either the tips or the muffler is bad. I am thinking abotu just putting my factory system back on, but I like the sound of the magnaflow. Does ANYONE have any insight.experience with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.....
