Default Yet another problem with my truck!

Well I have ANOTHER question on how to fix my lovely new truck. That I just bought a month ago. I just got my truck back from having all 16-valve spring fixed. I have driven it around for a week now. The check engine light came on. Took it to AutoZone to tell me what it was, Its the code that says something about Emission or EGR. 95% of the time this code stated the GAS CAP is bad. Put a new gas cap on there, I have driven it for 3 days now and the light didn’t got out. Anybody have any other ideas before I take it to a Dealer where they are going to charge me 85$$$$ to diagnosis it. Its an 04 Ram 1500 Hemi 51,000. I am running on E money wise because I had to pay to get the title, registration changed 99$, 485$ for the valve springs, 85$ at another dealer for a miss diagnosis and now 10$ for the gas cap. Any help would be great.

I had the same issues. First time the new gas cap fixed it. Second time it cost $700 to get evap hoses replaced b/c they were cracked and leaking fumes....

I had the same problem. It was just a little crack in the hose on top of the canister. I fixed it with some sealant. You can go back to Auto Zone and have the code cleared for free. The code was 0442

So would it be safe to say that the egr valve would be my first item to replace. If that doesnt change it, it more than likely is a crack in the egr lines? The egr valves are on back order and going to take 4-6 weeks? Thanks again guys this helps out alot.

Cody---------------Save yourself some serious doe!!!! Check all the rubber hoses, including the ones under the truck at the charchol canister. I would guess its one of these. Just get the necessary Silicone tubing and go through and replace them.

Damn----$700 bills--- that really hurts. I can't believe they raped you that much for some generic rubber hoses. Maybe I'm missing something here but your looking at maybe $20 worth of hose and your time to do it yourself.

Ok, well here is a question what is more likley to go out, The EGR valve, charcoal canister or a line? I am going to start with the egr valve. Because i just got it back from the shop and its close to the valve covers etc where he could have hit, or taken it off when he did the valve springs. IF that doesnt fix it i will look at the hoses and the charcoal canister after that. Do you think that would be ok?

If the EGR goes out, the computer will throw a code telling you the EGR is "out of range". If you didn't see a code stating that, leave it alone. The computer knows where the EGR valve is supposed to be running in order to achieve the proper amount of Exhaust Gas Recirculation for the engine.

Obviously, the choice is up to you, but-------------------

You may want to invest in a FSM---Factory Service Manual for your truck. It is the bible to the inner workings from the front to the rear bumper, and even if you have to pay for it---if you plan to keep your truck, its well worth the money. I have one for mine on CD and reference it nearly every time before I start any work on mine that I haven't done before.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!
