Was this O.K. to do with my CAI? More power or less MPG?

Default Was this O.K. to do with my CAI? More power or less MPG?

Ive got an Afe cold air intake that dips down right in front of the ram grille and kinda sits up against the inner wheel well liner on the passenger side, this weekend I cut out a square in the plastic wheel well liner to expose the CAI air filter to the outside instead of sitting up against it on the inside and just taking air from the grille area. I figured this way the filter will get air from behind in front of the tire and from in front by the grille.

Now heres the question: Was this O.K. to do? or should i have just let air go from the front and not expose the whole filter. Would this cause an increase in performance or would it just cause my MPG to go down for some reason?

you probably won't even notice a difference, but you will on the other hand be slinging water and mud and **** into your engine compartment and all over your filter. i wouldn't have done it.

if you drive through a big water puddle your engine is going to hydrolock. then its new engine time

At the very least you are gonna get water, mud, gravel, dirt, etc. all over the engine compartment & filter. Pop the hood next time you go somewhere when the roads are wet.

This would have been a whole lot better solution. And don't let the '03-'05 sway anybody, older add, it works on any 3rd Gen. non-CTD...

Don't have one myself, as my K&N filter & box sits more near the top and rear, but he sells a lot of 'em to the guys with those forward & low mounted ones. Was a thread on another forum last fall where a few guys had them and swore by it. One guy used his tuner to measure intake temps while driving before and after and had a very measurable difference with it installed.

Besides, I'd have thrown $50 shipped into that before I'd cut a hole in my well liner...

I like my Trueflow. Don't have to be concerned about water. I run the Amsoil EAA filter in it.

We all live and learn. But I left mine off after installing my headers, just to heat them up driving real good for a day or two so I could get at the bolts to re-torque them. Drove on the road on one of those slight misty, foggy, dreary mornings and couldn't believe how bad it slopped water and road dirt all over the whole engine compartment. The underside of the hood was even a dripping wet, dirty mess. So I don't think there is any way you are gonna want to leave the hole in it...
