I think I was taken!
I have a 2005 Ram 3500 quad diesel. I went to a local mechanic to have them install new upper and lower ball joints that i had bought myselfand it has turned into replacing rotors, because he said he couldnt remove them... new bearings because he said they couldnt get them out of the hub... new joints behind the hub because he used a torch to cut them off...Does this sound right to anyone? Please help, isnt the hub to be removed before the rotor and isnt the hub and bering assembly one pice that should be replaced as one piece. This work was initially quoted to cost $479.00 with my parts and now I had to pay $2300.00 to get my truck back..Thank you to anyone that can give me info.
Did he offer lube when he gave you the bill? My goodness sounds like somebody had a bad day, and they are probably laughing and playing cards right now with your money. About the most expensive labor I have heard in a while. I am not a mechanic by all means but you could of replaced half the front-end with that much money. Sounds extremely high to me.
while i'll say yes getting rotors off sometimes can be a pain in the grundel. there is no need for a torch. it's nothing an impact gun and a gear puller can't take care of. sounds like he got mad and just went ape **** on ur truck and now ur paying for it.
did he call you before he used the torch. I dunno if anyone got to the point where they wanted to cut stuff off my truck they better be calling me before they do it. just common courtesy lol.

Just ask for an itemized list. When he asks "what for?", just tell him "It's for the court papers. The judge will want to see what you charged me for all this.". You may be able to work out a refund at that point!
Yeah, unless you took it on and said "do whatever it takes to get it fixed, don't call me if something comes up unexpected" I wouldn't pay for ****. I once-upon-a-time took my ex-vehicle in to get the a/c recharged, and turned out they had to do a retro change out on it, but did this without informing me, and I needed my car early the next morning. Went to pick it up that evening and found out what they had done and the cost was like 3x as much as what I was initially quoted. I was told, well, you talked to so-and-so and he really shouldn't be giving quotes. I said, sorry, the receptionist put him on the phone, that's your fault not mine. Either take it all out right now or I'm only paying the originally quote price. And I drove away with my cold *** a/c for a very cheap price! Some times you just have to be firm. But it sounds like you already paid. But you can still go back and cause a scene.

I wonder if this work was done at a hole-in-the-wall shop or a big chain shop. Might make a difference on if this guy has any chance and recovering any of his lost funds.
Sounds like yougot raped. Just did my calipers and rotors, nothing a hammer couldn't get off. Front came right off back was rusted on. Bearing and hub are one assembly have had 2 replaced and rotors come off vehicle first. As far as I know replacing upper and lower ball jointconsist of removing wheel and nothing to do removing anything else there. No reason rotors should have been removed for that unless you asked them to check something else.
