diesel particulate filter
they are usually ceramic filter elements in the exhaust stream that filter out the particulates/soot. That's why new diesels don't really smoke.

but if you get all new exhaust it'll take care of that problem right? because we have a ford f-350 powestroke lariat and it smokes when the chips in and it has a magnaflow exhaust so i was wondering if thats why ours still smokes.

If Your Remove The DPF You Have To Get A Regen Delete Such As My SCT Livewire Extreme - The Program Will Run About 300 Bucks - But It's Good For Over 500 RWHP.
I Ran A 15.1 With The DPF On - & The SCT On Race.
Bombin' A Diesel Is The Way To Go.
And Jay(?), I Think - The DPF's Especially Ford And Dodge Cause The EGT's To Climb Over 1200* During A Regen - I Finally Saw My Truck Regenerate Leaving The Drag Strip. Scared The Crap Outta Me Seein' The EGT's Climb OVER 1200. Tell Me Thats Not Beggin' For Issues Down The Road...[:@]
