2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi 5.7 48K - Novice/Beginner
Used my Actron PocketScan Code Reader to determine that the P0406 error code. I purchased a new EGR valve from RockAuto.com for around $40. The valve comes with both gaskets and new 10mm bottom bolts. It did not come with the 8mm top bolts so I used my old ones.
Getting the bolts off was a little harder than anticpated. I recommend spraying them with LiquidWrench, etc. I had to try a few different socket adapters to find the right length and leverage. Once I got the old one off, the new one went on fairly easy. It is a little hard getting the top bolts and gasket lined up. I used a little bit of gasket adhesive to get it to stay in place until I could thread the bolt.
After the bolts were all good and tight, I then erased the error code via the Actron before I started the engine. The yellow engine light did not stay on after ignition - to my relief. I did not pull the fuse to reset the ECM as stated elsewhere in this thread and it appears that I did not need to do so.
It took me a few hours - primarily this being one of my first replacement jobs and I'm not mechanically inclined. Glad I did it myself in the end. I have heard of people paying up to $600 for this replacement at a shop.
