MPG towing a trailer?
My truck is an 04 Ram half tonwith the 5.7L Hemi. I recently bought a 27 foot travel trailer. I weighs approx 5500lbs. Without towing it I get 14mpg in the city and 17mpg hwy. Then it drops to 7-8mpg when towing the trailer. I'm just wondering if this normal or if anyone else tows a comparable trailer what mpg are you getting?
A lot depends on the aerodynamics and amount of drag the trailer produces. I tow a 6,500 lb loaded uncovered cargo trailer, I can normally squeeze about 10-11 MPG out on the highway, but if I pulling around town, forget it, maybe 5-7...
Travel trailers are the worst, big wind catching boxes. I barely noticed a drop in mpg's when I had my bass boat which was about 3000 lbs. or so with gear, gas, etc. The couple of times I went camping and pulled my buddies trailer which weighed roughly the same, my mileage dropped by at least 5 mpg.
Only cure I know of is to get a diesel...

I drag a 6x6x10' box trailer that weighs about 2500 for work every day (about 12 of 16k miles in 9 months).
City, no A/C : 11-13
City, with A/C : 9-11
Highway varies a LOT with speed. 60mph = 16 70mph = 13 80mph = 9
The city variances mostly have to do with number of stoplights that get me. Highway it's all about whether time or fuel is least valuable to you.
